The Arkansas motorcycle permit test

If you already hold a Class D license, you take a motorcycle knowledge exam, a vision test and a motorcycle skills test with the State Police. Without a Class D, the study guide says the Arkansas motorcycle permit test comes after the regular non-commercial knowledge exam. A Class M license starts at 16 and costs $40 for eight years, as of October 2026.

Class M, Class MD and the motorized bicycle certificate

DFA lists Class MD for ages 14 and 15, while the study guide says 14 to 16. Both start it at 14 and end it at the 16th birthday.

LicenseWho and what, per DFA and the study guide

How does the Arkansas motorcycle permit test work?

In order, per the study guide and ASP's scheduler:

  1. Book the Driver's License/Motorcycle Instruction Permit Test on ASP's scheduler.
  2. If you don't have a Class D, pass the regular non-commercial knowledge exam first. Class MD and motorized bicycle applicants also take both exams.
  3. Pass the motorcycle knowledge exam and a vision test. The knowledge exam stays valid for one year.
  4. Pass the motorcycle skills test, or waive it with a rider course.
  5. Take your results to any Revenue Office for the Class M endorsement or motorcycle license.

If you're under 18, bring your original birth certificate. A parent or legal guardian signs the ASP-33 form, in person or notarized (ASP's checklist allows either).

The skills test, or a rider course instead

The study guide says a Motorcycle Safety Foundation RiderCourse can stand in for the skills test. Show your completion card to an ASP driver license examiner within 90 days of the course.

If you take the skills test, you can't ride your motorcycle to the testing center yourself. The scheduler says so, and the study guide says it must be transported there or ridden by someone with an M endorsement. Not every site gives motorcycle skills tests. As of October 2026, Troop C offers them only at its Jonesboro headquarters, by appointment, while Troop L's Lowell site lists them on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 2:45 p.m.

What to study

ASP links to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's Motorcycle Operator Manual, 18th edition, as its motorcycle study guide. If you also need the regular exam, add the Arkansas Driver License Study Guide. For questions, the study guide gives ASP's Motorcycle Safety Coordinator's number: 501-618-8127.
