Arkansas permit study guide: where to learn

Start with the book the State Police wrote. ASP's Arkansas Driver License Study Guide is free, its October 2026 edition is current, and it says plainly that the more of it you know, the better your chances on the knowledge exam. After that, take ASP's official practice test and add a private app or site if you like drilling. ASP's page lists no other Arkansas permit study guide for the regular permit, apart from Spanish and Vietnamese editions of the same book.

What's the best Arkansas permit study guide?

The Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, ASP's free PDF, with Spanish and Vietnamese editions beside the English one.

Picking what fits you

If you learn by testing yourself, use ASP's free online practice test. ASP's page lists one official practice test, on the web and as an app, and the study guide says ASP isn't associated with third-party practice sites.

Private apps and sites are useful for drilling near the end. Their questions are their own, so check when an app was last updated and go back to the study guide for anything that doesn't match.

If reading is hard for you, ASP offers an oral test for people with a professionally diagnosed learning difference. Bring your IEP, 504 plan or evaluation and the kiosk reads every question and answer aloud through headphones.

The study guide's list of license requirements doesn't include a driver education course. If you choose one, Arkansas rules say a student 17 or younger gets at least 40 hours of classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction, including at least 30 hours in the classroom.

A study plan, from the book to your permit

Work through it in this order:

  1. Read the Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, slowing down for Chapter 2 on signals, signs and railroad crossings.
  2. Take ASP's online practice test, then the 20 questions on our practice test page, and reread the chapters behind anything you missed.
  3. Gather your documents using ASP's 1-2-3 Checklist for your age group.
  4. Watch ASP's one-minute traffic stop video and book a knowledge test on ASP's scheduler.
  5. Take the knowledge and vision tests at a State Police testing site, with a parent or guardian if you're under 18.
  6. Practice with a licensed driver aged 21 or older beside you, then book the driving test before your two-year permit runs out.
