Making an Arkansas permit test appointment

You book it on the Arkansas State Police's online scheduler, which covers every testing site in the state. Pick the Driver's License/Motorcycle Instruction Permit Test, then choose a site and a time. ASP's pages say an appointment guarantees your exam date and time, and at some sites an Arkansas permit test appointment is the only way in. You're asked to arrive 15 minutes early.

How do you make an Arkansas permit test appointment?

Most of it happens online:

  1. Watch ASP's one-minute video, What to Do During a Basic Traffic Stop. ASP calls it required viewing before you schedule any driver test.
  2. Open ASP's driver license exam scheduler and choose the Driver's License/Motorcycle Instruction Permit Test.
  3. Pick a testing site and a time. Book one person per time slot, because only one person is tested in each.
  4. Gather the documents on ASP's 1-2-3 Checklist for your age group.
  5. Arrive 15 minutes before your appointment.

Appointment types on the scheduler

The study guide names six appointment types:

  • Driver's License/Motorcycle Instruction Permit Test, for the permit knowledge exam or the motorcycle exam for an M endorsement. Non-U.S. citizens with immigration documents choose this one too, for more time with the examiner
  • Driver's License Test for Learning Differences, an oral test with an examiner
  • Driver's License and Motorcycle Skills Test, the driving portion, once you have an instruction permit
  • Motorcycle Skills Exam (Fort Smith and Warren)
  • Commercial Skills Exam
  • Commercial Driver's License Knowledge Applicants

The guide notes that not every site offers the immigration documents option or the oral test.

Can you walk in without an appointment?

It depends on the site, and each troop posts its own rules. As of October 2026, Troop L's sites in northwest Arkansas list written testing as appointment required, and Troop B lists the hours at each of its sites as by appointment. Other troop pages, such as Troop A's headquarters in Little Rock, list knowledge testing hours without marking them by appointment, but still say booking guarantees your time.

Before you go without one, check your troop's page or call the number on it.

Booking the driving test and checking test dates

The driving test uses the same scheduler, and ASP says the driving portion needs an appointment. You must already have your instruction permit. Skills tests run only in weather that's safe for testing, and the Troop Commander decides when to cancel them, so check before you leave if the weather turns.

If you fail the non-commercial knowledge exam, the scheduler says you must wait five days before you book again.
