The Arkansas permit test

Two agencies split the work in Arkansas. The Arkansas State Police (ASP) gives the knowledge, vision and driving tests at its troop testing sites, and the Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) issues the license at a Revenue Office. You can take the Arkansas permit test from age 14. Each written exam costs $5, which DFA adds to your license fee. ASP doesn't publish how many questions there are or the pass mark, but its study guide is free, and the 20 practice questions on this page are written from it.

How it works

How the Arkansas permit test works: a kiosk exam at a State Police site

  1. The Arkansas State Police (ASP) gives the knowledge test, the vision test and the driving test at testing sites run by its troops. DFA's Office of Driver Services then issues your license at a Revenue Office.
  2. You book through ASP's online scheduler. Its pages say an appointment guarantees your exam date and time, and some sites list written testing as by appointment only.
  3. ASP asks everyone to watch a one-minute video, What to Do During a Basic Traffic Stop, before scheduling a driver test.
  4. The test is taken on a computer kiosk. ASP's 2017 oral-testing instructions show three answer choices, A, B and C, and say you can skip two questions, which come back at the end.
  5. ASP doesn't publish the total number of questions or a pass percentage. Those same instructions say that if you reach 20 correct answers first, you won't have to answer the questions you skipped.
  6. If you have an IEP, a 504 plan or another professional evaluation, show it to the examiner to ask for an oral test, where the kiosk reads each question and answer through headphones.
  7. Pass the knowledge and vision tests and you get an instruction permit, valid two years from the date you passed.

Topics

What’s on the test

01

Signs, signals and pavement markings

Chapter 2 of the Arkansas Driver License Study Guide covers lights, signs and railroad crossings, and Chapter 3 covers the lines on the road. Shape and color tell you what kind of sign you're looking at.

Key points (4)
  • A flashing red light is the same as a stop sign. A flashing yellow light means slow down and go with caution.
  • A flashing yellow arrow lets you turn left after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.
  • Warning signs are yellow with black letters or symbols, and most are diamonds. Regulation signs are white squares or rectangles.
  • A solid double yellow line means no passing in either direction.
02

Instruction permits and teen license rules

Arkansas starts new drivers with an instruction permit from age 14, then a restricted learner's or intermediate license, then an unrestricted Class D at 18.

Key points (4)
  • You can apply for an instruction permit at 14, after passing the knowledge exam and a vision test.
  • With a permit, a licensed driver aged 21 or older must sit beside you, and every passenger wears a seat belt.
  • The permit lasts two years from the day you pass the knowledge exam.
  • An intermediate license holder may carry no more than one unrelated minor passenger unless a licensed driver 21 or older is in the front seat.
03

Right-of-way, turns and parking

Chapter 3 explains who goes first at intersections, roundabouts and stop signs, and where you may not park.

Key points (4)
  • With no sign or signal, yield to vehicles approaching from the right.
  • Drivers turning left yield to oncoming traffic going straight.
  • Pedestrians with a white cane or guide dog have absolute right-of-way.
  • Don't park within 15 feet of a fire hydrant or within 50 feet of a railroad crossing.
04

Following distance, headlights and signaling

Chapters 4 and 5 cover keeping space around your car, using your lights and horn, and letting other drivers know what you're about to do.

Key points (4)
  • Follow at least two seconds behind the vehicle ahead, and more on slippery roads.
  • Headlights go on 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise, and whenever your wipers are needed.
  • Dim your high beams within 500 feet of an oncoming vehicle.
  • Signal at least 100 feet before a turn or lane change.
05

School buses, trucks and stopped emergency vehicles

The guide's Arkansas law chapter covers school buses and the move over law, and Chapter 6 covers the blind spots around tractor-trailers.

Key points (4)
  • Stop for a school bus with red lights flashing, unless it's across a median 20 feet or wider.
  • Move to the lane farthest from a stopped law enforcement vehicle with its lights on, or slow down if you can't.
  • A car can vanish from a truck driver's view up to 200 feet behind the truck.
  • Allow at least four to six seconds when following a motorcycle.
06

Alcohol, phones and driving fitness

Chapter 8 covers vision, fatigue, health and alcohol, and Chapter 4 sets out Arkansas's phone rules by age.

Key points (4)
  • The adult limit is 0.08%. Drivers under 21 can be arrested for underage DUI at 0.02%.
  • Your body clears alcohol at about one drink per hour, and only time sobers you up.
  • Under 18, no phone use while driving, not even hands-free, except in an emergency.
  • Texting while driving isn't allowed at any age.
07

Vehicle emergencies

Chapter 9 walks through brake failure, blowouts, skids and what to do after a crash.

Key points (4)
  • If your brakes fail, pump the pedal, then apply the parking brake slowly, then shift to a lower gear.
  • In a skid, stay off the brake and steer where you want the car to go.
  • If your car hydroplanes, ease off the gas and keep the wheel straight.
  • Report a crash to DFA's Office of Driver Services within 30 days if someone is hurt or killed, or property damage is over $3,000.

Road signs

Road signs from Chapter 2 of the Arkansas study guide

Chapter 2 of the Arkansas Driver License Study Guide gives railroad crossings three pages of their own: the round yellow advance warning, the crossbuck, the number plaque for multiple tracks and the EXEMPT signs for crossings that are no longer used. It also covers the four lighted arrows, including the flashing yellow arrow for left turns.

  • Red octagon with white border and the word STOP in whiteStop: a full stop, then wait for crossing traffic and pedestrians to clear
  • Downward-pointing red triangle with white center and the word YIELD in redYield: slow down and give the right-of-way, stopping if you need to
  • Red circle with a white horizontal bar on a white square, reading DO NOT ENTERDo not enter: you may not drive into this road
  • Traffic signal with the red light lit and flash marks around itFlashing red light: the same as a stop sign
  • Four-section left-turn signal with the flashing yellow arrow litFlashing yellow arrow: turn left after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians
  • Round yellow sign with a black X and two letters RRailroad advance warning: slow down, look and listen for a train
  • White X-shaped crossbuck reading RAILROAD CROSSINGCrossbuck: yield the right-of-way to the train
  • Yellow diamond with a car and two S-shaped skid marksSlippery when wet: slow down in rain
  • Fluorescent orange triangle with a red reflective borderSlow-moving vehicle: it travels slower than normal traffic
  • Orange diamond with a black flagger symbol holding a flagFlagger ahead: slow down and follow the flagger's directions
  • Two-way road divided by two solid yellow lines; no passing in either directionDouble solid yellow: no passing in either direction

20 practice questions from the Arkansas Driver License Study Guide

These 20 questions are written from the Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, with three choices each, like the A, B and C answers in ASP's 2017 oral-testing instructions for its kiosk test. ASP doesn't publish a pass percentage, so we use an 80% bar: get 16 of the 20 right and count it as a pass. Miss one and the tutor explains it another way and says what's wrong with each other choice.

FAQ

Common questions

How many questions are on the Arkansas permit test?

ASP doesn't say. Its study guide and driver examination page give no question count and no pass percentage. ASP's instructions for oral testing mention that once you have 20 correct answers, you won't need to answer any questions you skipped, but they don't give the total. Our page on the question count goes through what is published.

Can I take the Arkansas permit test online?

ASP's pages describe the knowledge test only at its testing sites, on a computer kiosk, and don't list an online version. You can study, practice and book online, though: the study guide is a PDF, ASP has an official practice test, and appointments are made on ASP's online scheduler.

How much does the Arkansas permit test cost?

$5 for each written exam, as of October 2026. Under Act 1289 of 2015, as the study guide explains, that fee isn't paid at the test. It's added to the cost of your license and collected by DFA, and there's no limit on how many exam fees can be charged at that point.

How old do you have to be to get a permit in Arkansas?

14. At that age you can take the knowledge exam and vision test for an instruction permit. If you're under 18, a parent or legal guardian has to sign for you, either at the test or on a notarized ASP-33 form.

What do I need to bring to the Arkansas permit test?

Under 18, bring your original or certified U.S. birth certificate and a parent or legal guardian with their driver's license or state ID, or a notarized ASP-33. At 18 or older, bring two primary documents, or one primary and one secondary, from ASP's 1-2-3 Checklist. Bring your glasses or contacts too, if you wear them.

What happens if I fail the Arkansas permit test?

You book another try. ASP's scheduler says anyone who fails the non-commercial knowledge exam must wait five days before rescheduling. Each extra exam adds another $5 to what you pay DFA when you buy your license.

All 20 practice questions with answersA printable list of the practice test above
  1. Round yellow sign with a black X and two letters R

You see this round yellow sign ahead. What is it telling you?

A railroad crossing is ahead, so slow down, look and listen, and be ready to stop The study guide calls this the Round Yellow Advance Warning sign. It sits ahead of a highway-rail crossing and tells you to slow down, look and listen for a train, and be ready to stop at the tracks.

  2. Fluorescent orange triangle with a red reflective border

You see this sign on the back of a farm tractor. What does it mean?

The vehicle is moving slower than normal traffic The study guide says this reflective orange triangle with a red border warns other road users that the vehicle is traveling slower than the normal speed of traffic. Farm tractors, animal-drawn vehicles and road maintenance vehicles usually go 25 mph or less.

  3. Four-section left-turn signal with the flashing yellow arrow lit

You're in a left-turn lane and this signal is showing. What may you do?

Turn left, but first yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians A flashing yellow arrow means left turns are allowed, but they aren't protected. The study guide says you may turn left after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians, then go with caution.

  4. Railroad crossbuck with a plaque reading 3 TRACKS below it

You reach a railroad crossing marked with this sign. What should you expect?

There is more than one track, and trains may come from either direction The study guide says a sign under the crossbuck with a number shows how many tracks there are. With more than one track there may be more than one train, so watch for others coming from either direction.

  5. Traffic signal with the red light lit and flash marks around it

What must you do when you reach this signal?

Come to a complete stop, then go only when it's safe The study guide says a flashing red light is the same as a stop sign. You come to a complete stop, and then you go only when it's safe.

  6. Two-way road divided by two solid yellow lines; no passing in either direction

You're driving on a two-lane road with these center lines. Which is true?

No one may pass in either direction, but you may cross to turn into a driveway if no traffic is coming The study guide says a solid double yellow line means passing is prohibited for traffic in both directions. It also says you may cross a solid yellow line to turn into a driveway when no opposing traffic is approaching.

  7. What is the youngest age at which you can apply for an Arkansas instruction permit?

14 The study guide says you must be at least 14 to apply for an instruction permit. You pass the knowledge exam and a vision test, and the permit is issued for two years from the date you passed.

  8. You have an Arkansas instruction permit. Who must be with you when you drive?

A licensed driver who is 21 or older, in the seat beside you The study guide says a permit holder may drive with a licensed driver who is 21 or older and sits in the seat beside the driver. Everyone in the car must also wear a seat belt.

  9. You reach an intersection with no stop sign or traffic signal, and another car is approaching from your right. What should you do?

Yield to the car on your right The study guide says that at an intersection with no stop sign or traffic signal, drivers must yield to vehicles approaching from the right.

  10. How close to a fire hydrant may you park?

No closer than 15 feet The study guide's list of places not to park includes within 15 feet of a fire hydrant. Firefighters need room to reach it.

  11. You're turning left at a green light, and an oncoming car is going straight through the intersection. What should you do?

Yield and let the oncoming car go first The study guide says drivers turning left must yield to oncoming cars traveling straight ahead. A green ball light lets you turn, but it doesn't put you ahead of oncoming traffic.

  12. In normal conditions, how far back should you follow the vehicle ahead, according to the study guide?

At least two seconds The study guide uses the two-second rule. When the car ahead passes a fixed point, count the seconds until you reach it, and drop back if you get there before you finish counting to two. It adds that some situations need four seconds.

  13. When does the study guide say you must have your headlights on in Arkansas?

From 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise, and whenever you need your windshield wipers The guide says to turn on your headlights from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise, or any time you can't clearly see a person or object 500 feet away. It also says Arkansas law requires headlights whenever your wipers are needed.

  14. How far before a turn should you start signaling?

At least 100 feet The study guide says to signal at least 100 feet before a turn, and to use your signal 100 feet before a lane change, when merging into traffic and when parking.

  15. Your brakes suddenly stop working. What should you try first?

Pump the brake pedal several times The study guide says to pump the brake pedal several times first, since that often builds up enough pressure to stop. If that fails, apply the parking brake slowly so you don't lock the rear wheels, then shift to lower gears and look for a safe place to stop.

  16. On a two-lane road, a school bus stopped in the oncoming lane has its red lights flashing. What must you do?

Stop, and stay stopped until the red lights go off The study guide says you must make a complete stop for a stopped school bus with red lights flashing, whether it's in your lane, the opposing lane or at an intersection. The only exception is a bus on the other side of a median 20 feet or more wide.

  17. How far behind a tractor-trailer can your car disappear from the truck driver's view?

Up to 200 feet The study guide says a car can disappear up to 20 feet in front of the cab, on either side of the truck, and up to 200 feet behind it. Its rule of thumb: if you can't see the truck driver in the side mirror, the driver can't see you.

  18. On a multilane highway, you're coming up on a police car stopped on the shoulder with its lights on. What does Arkansas law require?

Move to the lane farthest from it if you can, and slow down if you can't The study guide says Arkansas law requires you to move over, when possible, to the lane farthest from a stopped law enforcement vehicle with its lights on. If changing lanes isn't safe or possible, you must reduce your speed as you pass.

  19. A driver under 21 can be arrested for underage driving under the influence at what alcohol concentration?

0.02% The study guide says you can be arrested for underage DUI with an alcohol concentration of 0.02% in breath or blood. If found guilty, you could have your license revoked until you turn 21 and be fined $2,000.

  20. You're 17 and driving with an intermediate license. Which phone use does Arkansas law allow?

None, except in an emergency The study guide says drivers under 18 may not use a cell phone while driving, and hands-free devices aren't allowed either. Use is limited to emergencies. Texting while driving isn't allowed at any age.
