Where to find ARRT accredited schools
ARRT’s Find an Educational Program page lets you pick a discipline: Radiography, Nuclear Medicine Technology, Radiation Therapy, Sonography, Vascular Sonography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging or Radiologist Assistant.
JRCERT accredits programs in radiography, radiation therapy, magnetic resonance and medical dosimetry. Its Find a Program search filters by program type, degree or certificate, evening, weekend and part-time tracks, distance education and state. Each program’s page shows tuition information, the award it grants and its program effectiveness data: the credentialing exam pass rate, job placement rate and completion rate, which programs report to JRCERT every year.
What accreditation do ARRT programs need?
Two things are checked. Your program in the discipline must be one ARRT has verified, and your associate degree or higher must come from an institution accredited by an agency on ARRT’s list. You have to finish both on or after the date ARRT gives for that agency. The list includes:
- JRCERT, for professional education in radiologic technology
- The Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT)
- The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)
- Institutional accreditors such as the Higher Learning Commission, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges
ARRT’s page has the full list and the start date for each agency. The degree rule applies if you completed your professional education on or after January 1, 2015.
The degree doesn’t have to be in the radiologic sciences, and you can earn it before or after your program, but you must have it before you take the exam.
Can you do an ARRT certification program online?
Not entirely. An ARRT-approved program has to sign off your clinical competencies as well as your coursework, so part of every program is clinical work you do in person. JRCERT’s search has a distance education filter for programs that deliver some of their teaching that way; ask any program how it arranges the clinical part. The ARRT exam itself is taken at a Pearson VUE test center, not at home.
How JRCERT accreditation awards work
An accredited program has been found to meet JRCERT’s standards. A first award lasts at most three years. A continuing award lasts at most eight years, with an interim report after the first four, and the shortest award is 18 months. An applicant program has applied but hasn’t been granted accreditation. Each program’s award letter is on its JRCERT page.
