ARRT exam: how the Radiography certification exam works

The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certifies and registers radiologic technologists in the United States, and its exam is the last of three steps, after education and ethics. For radiographers, the ARRT exam is the Radiography exam: 230 questions on computer at a Pearson VUE test center, 200 of them scored. Pass it, and you can use the title Registered Technologist, R.T., for as long as you keep meeting ARRT’s ongoing rules. ARRT gives exams in other disciplines too, such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and sonography.

How it works

How the ARRT exam works, from application to results

ARRT scaled score
1 to 74: not passed75 to 99: passed
A 75 doesn’t mean 75% right. ARRT turns your number of right answers into this scale so that every version of an exam sets the same standard.
  1. You apply through your ARRT online account, up to 90 days before you finish your educational program and degree, and pay the application fee by card.
  2. ARRT posts your Candidate Status Report in your account within two business days. It shows your ARRT ID number and your exam window, the 365 days in which you can take the exam.
  3. You book with Pearson VUE, which gives ARRT exams on computer at its test centers, online or by phone, starting 24 hours after you get the report.
  4. ARRT says most questions are multiple choice with one best answer. Some ask you to pick several answers, put options in order, click a spot on an image or answer after a short video.
  5. Questions come in random order, and the 30 pilot questions aren’t marked. You must answer each question before moving on, but you can flag it and come back if there’s time.
  6. When you finish you see a preliminary score on screen. It isn’t final: ARRT emails you when your official result is in your account, within about 10 business days.

Test day

What to bring to the ARRT exam

  • A primary ID that’s government-issued, unexpired and shows your name, photo and signature, such as a driver’s license, state ID, passport or military ID
  • A second ID with your name and signature, such as a Social Security card, bank card or school ID; both names must match your Candidate Status Report
  • Your ARRT letter approving accommodations, if you have one
  • Layers of clothing: the room can be warm or cold, and jackets and hooded clothing aren’t allowed in the testing room

Before you go

  1. Request any ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accommodations on your application. ARRT won’t take a request once your exam window is assigned.
  2. Book early, because ARRT can’t extend your window. If it closes, you reapply and pay again.
  3. To change or cancel, contact Pearson VUE at least 24 hours (one business day) before. Pearson charges a fee each time you reschedule.
  4. Arrive 30 minutes early. Arrive 15 minutes or more late and you may lose the appointment and your application fee.
  5. Expect a palm vein scan and a photo at check-in, and, from November 2026, a wand scan for hidden devices.
  6. Accept the nondisclosure agreement within two minutes when it appears, or the exam ends for that day.
ARRT: How to applyApply and pay through your ARRT account first. Your Candidate Status Report then gives you what you need to book with Pearson VUE.

Where to study

ARRT doesn’t sell or endorse study materials. What it publishes is the content specifications for each exam, which list every topic and how many questions each section gets, plus a handbook with the rules. Practice tests come from others, such as the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT).

FAQ

Common questions

What is the ARRT exam?

It’s the exam you pass to become certified and registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), a credentialing body based in St. Paul, Minnesota. It’s the last of three requirements: you must also meet ARRT’s education and ethics rules. ARRT says employers, state licensing agencies and federal regulators treat its credential as proof that you’ve met professional standards. ARRT says most technologists enter the profession as radiographers, so Radiography is the exam this guide follows, but ARRT also gives exams in sonography, MRI, nuclear medicine technology, radiation therapy and several postprimary disciplines.

Is ARRT the same as ASRT?

No. ARRT awards the credential and runs the exam. The American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) is a professional society for medical imaging and radiation therapy. ARRT describes it as shaping the profession through practice standards and curricula, offering career resources and advocacy, and approving, tracking and transferring continuing education (CE) credits for ARRT. ASRT also sells practice tests of its own.

How long is the ARRT exam?

The Radiography exam has 230 questions: 200 scored and 30 unscored pilot questions you can’t tell apart. You get 230 minutes of test time. Your appointment is 250 minutes in all, because ARRT adds 8 minutes for a tutorial, 2 for the nondisclosure agreement and 10 for a survey at the end. Other disciplines differ, and ARRT’s handbook for your pathway lists each one’s length.

Can you take the ARRT exam online?

No. ARRT exams are computer-based, but you take them at a Pearson VUE test center. ARRT’s handbook says Pearson has more than 200 centers in the U.S. and its territories and offers ARRT exams in selected Canadian, European, Asian and Australian cities. It describes no remote option. Practice tests sold by other companies are online, but they aren’t the ARRT exam.

Can you get accommodations on the ARRT exam?

Yes. ARRT follows the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Answer yes to the accommodations question on your application, and ARRT sends instructions for applying through Paradigm Testing, the company that reviews requests, with your documentation and a personal statement. Your application waits until the review is done, and you can’t book until you get the decision letter. You must ask again each time you apply, including for a retake. Comfort aids such as an inhaler or eye drops don’t need a request.

Does the ARRT exam change in 2027?

Its length doesn’t: the Radiography exam keeps 200 scored questions. What changes is the content. Exams through February 28, 2027 follow the content specifications that took effect on January 1, 2022. From March 1, 2027, they follow a version ARRT’s board approved in January 2026, which moves a few questions from patient care and radiation protection into the procedures sections. ARRT’s didactic and clinical competency requirements for Radiography programs change on the same date.
