ARRT exam prep: practice tests, question banks and courses

ARRT, the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, doesn’t sell a practice test or endorse any review product. For ARRT exam prep, what it does publish is its content specifications, a list of every topic on your exam. Practice questions come from other publishers: the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) with its Student Exam Assessment Library (SEAL) tests, McGraw Hill with RadReview and Clover Learning with RadTechBootCamp.

Is there an official ARRT practice exam?

No. ARRT’s handbook says it doesn’t recommend or endorse any review programs, mock registries or study guides, and it doesn’t give out lists of textbooks, because it builds its exams from many references. It also warns you to be careful with study materials that use its name or claim to include ARRT test questions.

The only ARRT practice questions you’ll see come at the start of the real exam: a short tutorial lets you try the question formats before your time starts. For what to study, ARRT points you to its content specifications and to your instructors and program director.

What ASRT’s SEAL exams give you

SEAL stands for Student Exam Assessment Library. ASRT says its Radiography tests help you prepare for the certification exam and for the Structured Self-Assessment that ARRT uses in its Continuing Qualifications Requirements.

ASRT calls the five tests that come with membership a $75 value. Nonmembers buy them one exam at a time.

Which ARRT exam prep fits you?

It depends on how you like to study and how long you have:

  • You want practice in the real question formats: RadReview includes multiple-select, sorted-list, image and video questions and a 200-question timed mock exam mapped to ARRT’s content weights, its site says.
  • You learn best from video: Clover Learning’s RadTechBootCamp is built around short video lessons, quizzes and unlimited mock exams, with monthly, quarterly or yearly plans.
  • You’re already an ASRT member, or plan to join: the five Radiography SEAL tests are included.
  • You’re on a tight budget: start with ARRT’s content specifications and your program’s materials, then add one or two SEAL tests.

None of these is linked to ARRT. Clover Learning says plainly on its site that it isn’t licensed by, endorsed by or affiliated with ARRT.

How to study for the ARRT exam

  1. Download the content specifications that match your test date; the content specifications page says which version applies.
  2. Work through the outline section by section, and ask your instructors or program director about any topic you’re unsure of. That’s ARRT’s own advice.
  3. Practice the question formats: multiple choice with one best answer, plus select-all, sorted-list, image and video questions.
  4. Time yourself. You must answer each question before you can move on, so ARRT suggests you guess, flag hard ones for review and come back to them if you have time.
  5. If you need a retake, use your section scores to choose what to study, and check whether the content specifications have changed after your last attempt.
