ARRT renewal: yearly renewal, the CE biennium and CQR

Renewing with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is a yearly job: ARRT renewal is online and due by the last day of your birth month. Every other year, renewal is also when you report your continuing education (CE). And if you earned your credential on or after January 1, 2011, you also face the Continuing Qualifications Requirements (CQR) every 10 years. Miss any of these and ARRT discontinues your credentials.

  • Every yearRenewal, by the end of your birth month
  • Every 2 yearsCE reported at renewal, in your birth month
  • Every 10 yearsCQR, if you were certified from 2011

When is ARRT renewal due?

The deadline is 11:59 p.m. Central Time on the last day of your birth month. Your first renewal comes at the end of the first birth month after you earn the credential, unless that’s less than two months away, in which case it’s the same month a year later.

When your renewal window opens, a Renew button appears on your dashboard, and you pay by credit or debit card. If you’ve opted in, ARRT emails you two months before your birth month, but renewing on time is your job either way. To renew a postprimary credential or the Registered Radiologist Assistant (R.R.A.), you must keep the supporting credential too.

ARRT CE requirements

Your CE biennium is a two-year period that ends on the last day of the month before your birth month. You must finish your credits by then and report them by the end of your birth month, at renewal. How many you need:

  • Registered Technologists (R.T.s): ARRT says most need 24 approved credits per biennium, however many credentials they hold; holders of a Sonography credential need at least 16 sonography-specific credits within those 24
  • Imaging Assistants (I.A.s): 10 credits of discipline-specific CE
  • Registered Radiologist Assistants (R.R.A.s): 50 approved credits

Activities ARRT accepts include Category A or A+ activities approved by an ARRT-recognized CE approver, relevant academic courses (16 CE credits per semester credit), advanced CPR certification from an ARRT-recognized provider, for up to six credits once per biennium, and authoring a published article. It doesn’t accept clinical instructorships, Basic Life Support certification or a newly earned credential on its own. ARRT can’t see your past CE, so it encourages you to keep your CE certificates for at least a year. Its biennial CE search tool lists approved activities.

What is ARRT CQR?

CQR applies to all R.R.A.s and to R.T.s who earned their credentials on or after January 1, 2011, once every 10 years. Your compliance period starts on the first day of your birth month in year eight of the 10-year period, and you then have three years to finish.

It starts with a Structured Self-Assessment (SSA). Where it shows gaps, ARRT prescribes CE, which also counts toward your biennial CE. You can skip the SSA and accept the largest CE prescription for your discipline instead. If any part of CQR is incomplete, your certification and registration are discontinued.

If your ARRT credential lapses

If you don’t complete renewal, your credentials are discontinued, and you’ll need to reinstate and pay an extra fee. Some people can reinstate online; others have to pass the exam again. Your dashboard shows the reinstatement deadlines and steps. Questions go to the phone option for renewal, reinstatement or continuing education.
