Average ASVAB score: percentiles and categories

An AFQT of 50 is the middle. Because the AFQT is a percentile, a 50 means you did as well as or better than half of the reference group, a national sample of 18 to 23 year olds who took the ASVAB in a 1997 study. That makes 50 the closest thing to an average ASVAB score, though it describes that 1997 group, not this year’s recruits.

What is a good ASVAB score?

It depends on what you want to do. To enlist, you need at least the minimum for your branch, such as 31 for the Army. For a particular job you also need its line scores, which come from your subtest scores rather than the AFQT.

What’s the average ASVAB score by branch?

Neither the official site nor the branches publish one, for recruits overall or for any branch. What the branches publish are minimums, and those are on our minimum scores page.

AFQT categories

The official site groups AFQT scores into these categories. So a 99 or a 93 is Category I, an 85, 80 or 70 is Category II, a 55 is IIIA and a 35 is IIIB. The top two categories, I and II, cover every score from 65 up.

Reading a percentile, with the official example

Take the official site’s example, a 62: you did as well as or better than 62% of the 1997 reference sample. That sample is fixed, so your score doesn’t compare you with the other people who tested on your day.
