ASVAB Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension

Word Knowledge asks you to pick the best synonym for a given word. On the computer test that’s 15 questions in 9 minutes, so it moves fast. Paragraph Comprehension asks you to get information from short written passages. ASVAB Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension both count toward your AFQT, and together they make your Verbal Expression (VE) score.

Is there an ASVAB word knowledge list?

Not an official one. The official site describes the subtest and gives sample questions, but it doesn’t publish a vocabulary list. Lists you find on other sites don’t come from the test makers.

The two verbal subtests

SubtestComputer testPaper test
Word Knowledge (WK)15 questions, 9 min35 questions, 11 min
Paragraph Comprehension (PC)10 questions, 27 min15 questions, 13 min

What is VE on the ASVAB?

Verbal Expression (VE) isn’t a subtest you sit. The Air Force describes it as Paragraph Comprehension and Word Knowledge combined. VE shows up in the Army’s GT, Clerical and Combat line scores and in three of the Air Force’s four MAGE areas, so vocabulary practice helps you more than once.

How to practice vocabulary and reading

  • Start with the official Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension sample questions.
  • Read in English every day. The ASVAB is given only in English.
  • When you miss a word, learn it with a sentence of your own, not just a definition.
  • For passages, find the main point before you look at the answer choices.
