What happens after you meet the Coast Guard ASVAB minimum?
Once you have a qualifying ASVAB score and a medical exam, your recruiter checks the other qualifications, such as criminal background and credit checks.
Ratings and rescue swimmer
The rating pages for Maritime Enforcement Specialist and Aviation Survival Technician (the rescue swimmer) don’t list ASVAB scores. Ask a recruiter for the line scores your rating needs.
Officers and the GT score
Coast Guard officer programs set their own test rules. The PY25 officer application guide (updated March 2024, the latest we found) asks for a GT score of 109 for programs that require a test, where GT is Arithmetic Reasoning plus Verbal Expression, or 110 if your ASVAB was taken before July 1, 2004. It also accepts an SAT of 1100 (Critical Reading and Math, taken after March 31, 2005) or an ACT composite of 23 instead. The guide says members can seek to retake the ASVAB through their ESO.
Coast Guard ASVAB practice test
The Coast Guard says a practice test can predict how you’ll score. There’s no Coast Guard version, so our free practice test and the official sample questions are a good place to start.
