Who can renew online
You'll certify your vision. Under 80, you confirm an eye exam within the past year. At 80 or older, you upload form DR 2498 from an eye doctor, dated within six months.
- You're 21 or older, and your license expired less than one year ago.
- No active or pending restrictions on your license, and no special medical restrictions.
- No change to your name or vision.
- No DUI in the last five years, and no written test required after a points suspension.
- No valid Colorado ID card on file, since you can hold a license or an ID, not both.
How does Colorado license renewal online work?
- Go to the renewal service on myDMV and check that you're eligible.
- Confirm your details and certify your vision.
- Pay the license fee plus a small convenience fee by Visa, Mastercard or American Express. As of October 2026, a REAL ID license renewal is $34.
- Print your receipt and keep it with your old license.
- Your card usually arrives in 10 to 14 business days, and can take up to 30.
Renewing by mail
The same eligibility rules apply. Use form DR 2746 if you're 79 or younger, or DR 2330 at 80 or older, and pay by check or money order made out to the Colorado Department of Revenue. The DMV says it takes about four weeks. Temporarily lawfully present and non-lawfully present applicants can't renew by mail.
When you have to renew in person
An office renewal needs an appointment and includes a basic eye exam. You leave with a paper temporary license.
- You're under 21. A minor license expires 20 days after your 21st birthday, and you renew it to an adult license on or after that birthday.
- You're getting REAL ID for the first time.
- Your name has changed. Bring certified documents for every change since your last Colorado card.
- Your license expired one year ago or more.
- Your online renewal was rejected, for example because your vision has changed.
Renewing a permit
Driver and motorcycle permits that expired less than one year ago can be renewed. A commercial learner's permit can't: you retake the commercial written tests at an office instead.
