How do you get a Colorado state ID?
- If it's your first Colorado credential, do the DMV's online pre-registration.
- Book an ID appointment on the DMV's scheduler at any state driver license office.
- Bring proof of identity and lawful presence, your Social Security number (you can just say it), and proof of address: one document for a Standard ID, two for REAL ID.
- Under 21, a parent or legal guardian comes with you, with their own ID and proof of guardianship, such as your birth certificate naming them as your parent.
- Pay the fee and have your photo taken. You get a paper temporary ID, and the card is mailed.
Colorado ID appointment or walk-in?
State driver license offices work by appointment. Some offices that don't give the written test still issue new IDs: the Denver Regional Service Center on the Auraria Campus, and Douglas County's offices in Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch and Lone Tree, which you book through Douglas County.
Fees and delivery
Cards usually arrive in 10 to 14 business days but can take up to 30. If yours hasn't come after 30 days, check on myDMV, email the DMV's returned credentials office, call 303-205-5600, or go back to the office that issued it, no appointment needed.
Colorado lets you hold a driver license or permit, or an ID card, but not both at once.
| ID card | Fee (as of October 2026) |
|---|---|
| REAL ID, under 60 | $14.00 |
| REAL ID, over 60 | Free |
| Standard | $14.00 |
Renewing a Colorado ID
You can renew any time before it expires, and an ID expired less than 10 years ago can still be renewed. Under 21, you renew at an office. From 21, you can renew online or at an office, and by mail if you're eligible. Over 60, renewal is free.
