What is the CT driving age for a permit and a license?
| Age | What applies |
|---|---|
| 16 | Earliest age for a learner's permit. A parent or guardian attends the test or signs a notarized Form 2-D |
| 16 and 17 | Driver education, a parent class and a waiting period before the road test |
| Under 18 | No phone at all while driving, an 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew, and passenger limits for the first year of the license |
| 18 and older | Adult learner's permit, held at least 90 days, plus the 8-hour Safe Driving Practices course if you've never had a license |
| Under 21 | Zero tolerance: .02% blood alcohol or more breaks the law |
When you can take the road test
When you can take the road test depends on your training, not a fixed age:
| You are | Hold your permit at least |
|---|---|
| 16 or 17, trained by a driving school or high school | 120 days |
| 16 or 17, home trained | 180 days |
| 18 or older | 90 days, with some exemptions |

Turning 18 with a permit
You still need the learner's permit if you turn 18 before you get your license, the DMV says. From 18, the teen passenger and curfew rules stop applying, but you still can't use a hand-held phone while driving, at any age.
Other age rules
- Motorcycle permit: you need a valid Connecticut driver's license first, and a notarized Form 2-D if you're under 18.
- Commercial learner's permit: 18 to drive within Connecticut only, 21 to drive across state lines or carry hazardous materials.
- Qualified trainer: at least 20 years old, with four years of licensed driving and no suspension.
