How does the CT motorcycle permit test work?
- 16 questions on the motorcycle and driver's manuals, and a vision test at the same visit.
- By appointment, booked on the same knowledge test site as the car permit. The Cheshire testing center doesn't give it.
- Bring your Connecticut license and a completed Form R-229. Under 18, add a notarized Form 2-D.
- The permit comes by mail within 20 business days.
Riding on the permit
The permit lasts 60 days and can be renewed once in the same calendar year. While you hold it, you:
- Ride only in Connecticut, and only in daylight.
- Carry no passengers.
- Stay off limited-access highways.
- Wear eye protection and a helmet that meets state rules.
Fees
| Item | Fee |

Getting the M endorsement
You don't need a course for the permit, but you do for the endorsement: a DMV-approved novice course through CONREP, with classroom and on-motorcycle training. The certificate is good for two years. After the endorsement, riders 16 and 17 can't carry passengers for six months, and riders 18 and older for the first three months.
For practice, the motorcycle manual is the official source, and some of the apps on the study options page include motorcycle tests.
