CT DMV permit practice test: where to practice and study

The DMV posts its own practice material for free: three practice tests in English and Spanish, each with the answers at the end, and sample questions in the CT DMV Mobile app. The first CT DMV permit practice test has 42 questions with three choices each, so it runs longer than the real 25-question test. All of it comes from the Connecticut Driver's Manual, which is still the main thing to read. Apps and websites add more questions if you want them.

How do you use the CT DMV permit practice tests?

  1. Read the Connecticut Driver's Manual first, chapter by chapter. The practice tests' own instructions say to review the manual, then check what you know.
  2. Take Practice Test One without looking anything up. It mixes teen rules, alcohol, signs, parking, turns, lane lines and following distance.
  3. Check your answers at the end. The real test needs 20 out of 25, which is 80%, so use that as your target.
  4. For every miss, find the rule in the manual and read the whole section around it.
  5. Then take Practice Test Two and Three the same way. All three come in Spanish too.

A study path through the manual

  1. Chapter 1, Obtaining a Connecticut Driver's License: permit rules, qualified trainers, driver education and the passenger and curfew limits for 16- and 17-year-olds.
  2. Chapter 2, Before You Get Behind the Wheel: vehicle checks, seat belt and child seat laws, the cell phone law and insurance.
  3. Chapter 3, Driving Behaviors: work zones, sharing the road, the three-second rule, passing, aggressive and distracted driving, and drinking and driving.
  4. Chapter 4, Road Safety: speed, right-of-way, roundabouts, parking, lights, horn, turn signals and what to do after a crash.
  5. Chapter 5, Know the Road: pavement markings, traffic signals and signs.

Chapters 2 to 5 end with study questions, and the answers are on the manual's last pages. That's ten more questions straight from the DMV.

The CT DMV Mobile app

The DMV's free app, CT DMV Mobile, says it has practice knowledge test questions and answers from the real learner's permit test, plus a parent quiz on teen drivers and DMV office locations. On the App Store it's rated 3.1 from 455 ratings, and its last update there was in August 2019, so check what it says against the current manual.

Choosing extra practice

  • If you're 16 or 17, you'll do 30 hours of classroom driver education anyway, so the DMV's free tests may be enough on top of it.
  • If you learn by repetition, an app with a large question bank gives you more tries than the DMV's three PDFs.
  • If you'll test in Spanish, the DMV's manual and all three practice tests come in Spanish. The language page lists the rest.
  • Whatever you pick, a third-party app's questions aren't the DMV's. The test is built from the manual, so the manual decides any disagreement.
