Connecticut DMV online services for new drivers

The permit test itself isn't online: you take the vision and knowledge tests in person at a DMV office. The steps around it are online, though. Connecticut DMV online services let you book and prepay the test, replace a lost permit, upgrade to a license after your road test, track your card in the mail and check a driver's license status.

Can you take the CT permit test online?

No. Both tests happen in person, in the same appointment, and you have to pass the vision test before you can take the knowledge test. Connecticut doesn't offer the knowledge test from home.

  • Online: booking and paying, the Work Zone Safety Course, the manual and the DMV's practice tests.
  • In person: the vision test and the 25-question knowledge test, at one of ten DMV locations.

Which Connecticut DMV online services can permit holders use?

  • Book, change or cancel a knowledge test or road test.
  • Replace a lost, stolen or damaged standard learner's permit for $19, in about 5 to 7 minutes. It comes by mail within 30 days. Motorcycle, commercial and drive-only permits have to be replaced in person.
  • Upgrade your permit to a license once you've met the time, training and road test rules. It takes about 7 minutes and costs $84.
  • Track your permit or license card while it's in the mail.
  • Request your driving history.
