How to schedule your CT permit test and road test

You book and pay online, and there are no walk-in permit tests: the DMV gives learner's permit tests by appointment only. To schedule your CT permit test, use the DMV's knowledge test booking site, pick one of ten locations and prepay the $40 testing fee and $19 permit fee (as of October 2026). The road test comes later and has its own booking site.

How do you schedule a CT permit test online?

  1. Take the free Work Zone Safety Course first and print the certificate. You'll need it at the test.
  2. Open the knowledge test booking site. The same site books car, motorcycle and commercial learner's permit tests.
  3. Pick a location and time, and give a valid email address or mobile number.
  4. Pay the $40 testing fee and the $19 permit fee online.
  5. Print Form R-229 after booking, fill it in and sign it. Keep your PIN, since you need it to view or change the appointment.

Where you can take the knowledge test

Learner's permit knowledge tests are given at these ten locations:

  • Bridgeport
  • Cheshire
  • Danbury
  • Enfield
  • Hamden
  • Norwalk
  • Old Saybrook
  • Waterbury
  • Wethersfield
  • Willimantic
  • Cheshire is a testing center only, and it gives car permit tests only, not motorcycle or commercial ones.

The locations page has every office and what it does.

Scheduling the road test

You can book a road test only after you've passed the knowledge test and held your permit for the required time. Road tests have their own booking site, and the PIN it gives you lets you view or change the appointment later.

  • Reschedule at least three days ahead, or you lose the prepaid fee.
  • If weather cancels testing in your area, the DMV emails you how to rebook. If testing goes ahead, you have to show up or lose the fee.
  • Arrive 15 minutes early, and don't drive there alone without a license.

Changing or canceling an appointment

Use the DMV's appointment search page to cancel, reschedule or see your receipt, and choose the right appointment type so you don't cancel the wrong one. An appointment covers only the service you booked, so a second transaction needs a second appointment.
