The CT driver manual: what's in it and how to study it

The DMV says its manual is the only source for all test questions, so it's the one book you need. The CT driver manual is free as a PDF in English and Spanish, revised March 2023, and the English version is also on the DMV's site as a web page. Chapters 1 to 5 hold the rules of the road, and Chapter 6 is the DMV's contact list.

Which CT driver manual should you use?

  • English PDF, revised March 2023.
  • Spanish PDF, revised March 2023.
  • The 2023 English manual as a web page on the DMV's site.
  • Audio versions in English and Spanish. The DMV notes they don't reflect recent updates, so use them only alongside the PDF.

Using the CT driver manual as a permit test study guide

  1. Start with Chapter 1. It has the teen rules, like the 11 p.m. curfew and passenger limits, which turn up on the DMV's own practice tests.
  2. Read Chapters 3 and 4 slowly. They hold many of the numbers you'll be asked about: three seconds of following distance, 10 feet from a hydrant, 25 feet from a stop sign, three feet when passing a cyclist.
  3. Learn the sign shapes in Chapter 5 by heart, especially the circle for a railroad crossing and the pentagon for a school zone.
  4. Answer the study questions at the end of Chapters 2 to 5, then check the answers on the last pages.
  5. Finish with the DMV's three practice tests.

What the 2023 manual doesn't mention

The Work Zone Safety Course became a requirement for learner's permit applicants on January 1, 2026, after this edition came out, so the manual doesn't list it. The DMV's knowledge test page does. The manual also points you to ct.gov/dmv for the documents list, since rules change faster than the book.
