Booking a Kentucky permit test or license appointment

Kentucky uses two booking systems. Written and road tests are booked with the Kentucky State Police on their online scheduler. Everything else, including getting the permit card, renewing or applying for a REAL ID, happens at a Transportation Cabinet Regional Office, which takes online appointments and walk-ins.

Schedule a written or road test with KSP

  1. Open the KSP scheduler and pick Written, Road or Motorcycle Skills. Written covers the permit, CDL permit, CDL endorsement, HazMat and motorcycle permit tests.
  2. Choose any regional testing site. You don't have to test in your own county.
  3. Enter the applicant's own legal name, not a parent's.
  4. Wait for the confirmation email. If it doesn't arrive, you aren't booked. It has your confirmation number, what to bring and links to cancel or reschedule.

When test slots open

  • New appointments are released at 8 a.m. local time on each day the site tests, three weeks ahead.
  • If you see 'No Availability', check again at 8 a.m. or try another site.
  • If you want to test on a set date, such as your 15th birthday, look three weeks before it.
  • CDL road tests aren't on the scheduler. Call (800) 542-5990 and press 1.
  • Road tests for Oldham, Barren and Shelby counties are booked by phone, for county residents going for an intermediate license.

Regional Office appointments and walk-ins

Regional Offices are open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Appointments are recommended and can only be booked online. New slots open each week, and you get an email and text with a link to change them. Walk-ins are taken at every office, first come, first served.

One Saturday a month, every Regional Office opens for walk-ins from 8 to 11:30 a.m. The next one is November 7, 2026. Testing isn't offered on those Saturdays.

REAL ID appointment

A REAL ID can only be requested in person at a Regional Office, so book a Regional Office appointment or walk in. Fill in the myDrive pre-application first and bring two proofs of residency. Counties without a Regional Office sometimes host pop-up events. Those need an appointment, which opens two weeks before, and are only for residents of the host county.
