The Kentucky Driver Manual

The Kentucky Driver Manual is the free study guide for the permit test, published by the Kentucky State Police. KSP calls it the only approved source for the written test. The current English edition was updated in July 2026, and there's a Spanish edition from 2023. Motorcycle and commercial drivers have their own manuals.

How to use it as a study guide

  • Section Six, Rules of the Road, has the signs, signals and right-of-way rules. The signs part of the test must be answered on your own, so spend time here.
  • Section Eight has the speed limits and the four-second following rule. Section Seven covers school buses, roundabouts and parking.
  • Section One explains permits and the teen rules. Expect questions on who can supervise you and the midnight to 6 a.m. limit.
  • Section Three has the alcohol limits: 0.08 for adults and 0.02 under 21.
  • Finish with Section Twelve, Test Your Knowledge, a set of sample questions with three choices each.

What else is in the manual

Section One also explains the road test, including the car inspection and what's scored, so it's worth reading again before your drive test. Section Ten covers sharing the road with cyclists, motorcycles, trucks and emergency vehicles, and Kentucky's move-over law.
