Kentucky · Permit test

Can you take the Kentucky permit test online?

No. The Kentucky written permit test is only given in person, by the Kentucky State Police, at a regional testing site with an appointment. A lot of the paperwork around it is online, though: booking the test, the myDrive pre-application, the teen driving course, and renewing a license later on.

What you can do online before the test

  • Book the written test on the KSP scheduler.
  • Make a myDrive account and fill in the pre-application, which speeds up your Regional Office visit.
  • Read the Kentucky Driver Manual, which is a free PDF, and try its Test Your Knowledge questions.
  • Use the IDocument Guide quiz on drive.ky.gov to get a list of the documents you need.

The teen driving course online

Teens need a 4-hour graduated licensing course before their full license. RightLane's online version costs $12.50 and reports completion to the state for you. Alive at 25 is free and runs on Zoom as well as in person. The high school course is free too, but you mail the completion papers yourself.

Kentucky driver's license renewal online

You can renew an eligible license or learner's permit online through myDrive, choosing a 4-year or 8-year term. First you link your account with a 9-character Letter ID from a Transportation Cabinet letter dated on or after June 6, 2026. You can ask for one by mail when you sign up, and it takes 5 to 10 business days.

You can't upgrade to a REAL ID online, and motorcycle permits and REAL ID permits must be renewed in person. Once linked, myDrive also handles replacements, address changes and reinstatement fees.

Rules and fees can change, so check the official site before your test.
