Where to take the Kentucky permit test

Kentucky doesn't have a DMV. Tests are given by the Kentucky State Police at 28 regional testing sites, and you can use any of them. Cards, renewals and REAL IDs come from Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Driver Licensing Regional Offices, open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is the KSP list from May 2026.

Unless noted, sites test Monday to Friday. Motorcycle skills tests run only at some sites, on set days. Frankfort road tests moved to 103 Regan Street on October 5, 2026.

Booking a test at these sites

Every test is by appointment on the KSP scheduler. New slots open at 8 a.m. local time on testing days, three weeks ahead, and they go quickly. Since July 2022 you can test at any site, whatever county you live in. If the one nearest you shows 'No Availability', try another or check back the next morning.

Driver Licensing Regional Offices

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet runs the Regional Offices that issue permits and licenses, renew them and handle REAL IDs. Its Division of Driver Licensing is what other states would call the DMV. Use the office finder on drive.ky.gov for addresses. Every office takes walk-ins as well as online appointments, and one Saturday a month they all open for walk-ins from 8 to 11:30 a.m.

For questions, the Division of Driver Licensing's Central Office is at (502) 564-1257. The Frankfort building at 200 Mero Street doesn't offer driver services right now.
