Kentucky permit test

In Kentucky the permit test isn't run by a DMV. The Kentucky State Police give it, at regional testing sites, by appointment. You can take it at 15, you pass with 80%, and every question comes from the Kentucky Driver Manual. Below is a free 20-question practice test written from that manual.

How it works

The KSP written test: a vision check, then questions from the manual, 80% to pass

  1. The Kentucky State Police (KSP) gives the written test at its regional testing sites, by appointment only. You book on the KSP scheduler.
  2. You take a vision test first. You need at least 20/40, with or without glasses, before you can move on to the written test.
  3. The questions cover driving rules, regulations, procedures and highway signs, all from the Kentucky Driver Manual. You need a score of 80% to pass.
  4. KSP doesn't publish how many questions are on the test.
  5. Testing tablets can read the test aloud in English and several other languages. The signs part must still be answered from your own knowledge.
  6. On test day, check in at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Regional Office with your documents first. After you pass with KSP, go back to the Regional Office to get your permit.
  7. If you fail the written test, you can retake it on the next available day.

Topics

What’s on the test

01

Signs, signals and road markings

Kentucky's manual teaches signs by shape and color, then covers traffic lights, arrows and flashing signals. The signs part of the test must be answered from your own knowledge, even if the rest is read aloud.

Key points (4)
  • Yellow diamonds warn of hazards. Orange signs mark work zones. The pentagon is for school signs.
  • A round yellow RR sign comes before a railroad crossing. The white X-shaped crossbuck is at the tracks and means the same as a yield sign.
  • A flashing red light means stop, then go when it's clear. A flashing yellow means slow down and watch for others.
  • Left on red is allowed only from a one-way street onto a one-way street, after a full stop.
02

Permits and Kentucky's graduated licensing rules

Drivers under 18 move through a permit, an intermediate license and a full license. This chapter covers the waiting periods, supervision and the restrictions that come with each step.

Key points (4)
  • You can take the written and vision tests at 15. A licensed driver 21 or older must sit in the front passenger seat whenever you drive on a permit.
  • Under 21, you hold the permit 180 days before the road test. At 21 or older, it's 30 days.
  • Teens log 60 hours of practice, 10 at night. Under 18, no driving from midnight to 6 a.m. without good cause, and only one unrelated passenger under 20.
  • A driver under 18 who gets more than six points may have their license suspended.
03

Right-of-way and intersections

Who goes first at stop signs, left turns, driveways and highway ramps. The manual stresses that no one should assume they have the right-of-way.

Key points (4)
  • At a four-way stop, if you arrive together, yield to the driver on your right.
  • When turning left, yield to oncoming traffic, including vehicles turning right.
  • Coming out of a driveway or private road, yield to drivers on the highway. On a ramp, yield to drivers already on the interstate.
  • Enter a roundabout counterclockwise. Staying in the left lane of a limited access highway is illegal.
04

Speed limits, following distance and night driving

Kentucky's default speed limits, how to count a safe following gap, and the distances for headlights and passing.

Key points (4)
  • Unposted limits: 65 mph on interstates and parkways, 55 on other state highways, 35 in business or residential districts, 15 in public parking lots.
  • Follow no closer than four seconds behind the car ahead.
  • If you can't see more than 100 feet ahead, don't drive faster than 25 mph, and use low beams.
  • Dim your lights within 500 feet of an oncoming car and 300 feet of a car you're following. Finish a pass before you come within 200 feet of an oncoming vehicle.
05

Alcohol, seat belts and child seats

Kentucky's DUI limits and implied consent law, plus the rules for seat belts, child restraints and booster seats.

Key points (4)
  • The limit is 0.08 for drivers 21 and older, and 0.02 for drivers under 21.
  • By driving in Kentucky you agree to a lawfully requested blood, breath or urine test.
  • Children 40 inches tall or less ride in a child restraint. Children under 8 who are 40 to 57 inches ride in a booster seat.
  • In a vehicle built after 1981, the driver and all passengers must wear a seat belt.
06

School buses, emergency vehicles and sharing the road

When you must stop for school and church buses, how to react to sirens, and what the move-over law asks of you.

Key points (4)
  • Stop for a stopped school or church bus from either direction, unless you're going the other way on a four-lane road split by a barrier or unpaved median.
  • For a siren or flashing red or blue lights, pull to the right, clear of intersections, and stop. Never follow an emergency vehicle closer than 500 feet.
  • Passing a stopped emergency vehicle, move to a lane not next to it if it's safe. If not, slow down.
  • An orange and red triangle on the back of a vehicle means it travels under 25 mph.

Road signs

Kentucky road signs: the part you must answer on your own

Signs are the one part of the Kentucky permit test you can't have read to you in someone else's words. KSP says you must answer the signs portion from your own knowledge, so learn the shapes and colors in Section Six of the manual.

  • Red octagon with white border and the word STOP in whiteStop: come to a full stop, then go when it's clear
  • Downward-pointing red triangle with white center and the word YIELD in redYield: slow down and let others go first
  • Red circle with a white horizontal bar on a white square, reading DO NOT ENTERDo not enter: you'd be going the wrong way

  • Traffic signal with the red light lit and flash marks around itFlashing red: stop, then go when it's clear
  • Traffic signal with the yellow light lit and flash marks around itFlashing yellow: slow down and watch for others

20 practice questions from the Kentucky Driver Manual

These 20 questions are written from the Kentucky Driver Manual, in the multiple-choice style of the KSP written test. KSP doesn't say how many questions the real test has, but it does set the pass mark at 80%. Here that means 16 right out of 20. After each answer, the tutor can explain it a second way or tell you why the other choices are wrong.

FAQ

Common questions

How many questions are on the Kentucky permit test?

The Kentucky State Police don't publish a number. What they do publish is the pass mark: 80%. The questions cover driving rules, procedures and highway signs, and all of them come from the Kentucky Driver Manual. Practice sites often quote a number, but it isn't an official KSP figure.

How old do you have to be for a Kentucky driving permit?

You can take the vision and written tests for a learner's (instruction) permit at 15. Under 18, a parent or legal guardian listed on your birth certificate must come with you and sign your application. You also bring a School Compliance Verification Form (TC 94-200) from your school.

Can you take your permit test online in Kentucky?

No. The written test is given in person by the Kentucky State Police at regional testing sites, by appointment only. What you can do online is book the test on the KSP scheduler and fill in your pre-application on myDrive before you go.

How do I schedule my Kentucky permit test?

Book a written test on the KSP online scheduler. New appointments open at 8 a.m. on each testing day, up to three weeks ahead, and popular sites fill fast. You can test at any regional site. Keep the confirmation email, because without it you aren't booked.

What happens if I fail the Kentucky permit test?

You can retake the written test on the next available day. Book a new appointment through the KSP scheduler. If you fail the road test later on, the wait is longer: at least one week.

What are the rules on a Kentucky learner's permit?

A licensed driver 21 or older must sit in the front passenger seat whenever you drive. Under 18, you can't drive between midnight and 6 a.m. without good cause, and you can carry only one unrelated passenger under 20. Under 21, you hold the permit 180 days before the road test. At 21 or older, it's 30 days.

Can I take the Kentucky permit test in Spanish?

Yes. The Kentucky Driver Manual lists Spanish among more than two dozen languages for the written test, and KSP has a Spanish edition of the manual. Testing tablets can read the test aloud. If you need an interpreter or the test given orally, ask for it when you book.

Is there a free Kentucky permit practice test?

Yes. The Kentucky Driver Manual ends with a Test Your Knowledge section of sample questions. The 20 questions on this page are free too, with an explanation for every answer.

All 20 practice questions with answersA printable list of the practice test above
  1. Yellow diamond with a black arrow curving to the right

What kind of sign is this?

A warning sign about possible danger ahead The Kentucky Driver Manual says warning signs are usually yellow with black lettering or symbols and diamond shaped. They tell you about possible danger ahead, here a curve, so you can slow down and be ready to stop.

  2. Fluorescent yellow-green pentagon with two children walking

This sign tells you that you are near:

A school The manual's sign-shape chart lists the pentagon for school signs. You'll see it for school zones and school crossings, so watch for children and lower your speed.

  3. Orange diamond reading ROAD WORK 1000 FT

You pass this sign. What does it mean?

A work zone is ahead, with people working on or near the road The manual says work zone signs are generally diamond or rectangular and orange with black letters or symbols. They warn of construction, maintenance or emergency work, reduced speeds and detours.

  4. Round yellow sign with a black X and two letters R

    What does this sign mean?

A highway-railroad crossing is ahead The manual says this round yellow sign is placed before a highway-railroad grade crossing. It tells you to slow down, look and listen for a train, and be ready to stop.

  5. Traffic signal with the yellow light lit and flash marks around it

What does this signal mean when it keeps flashing?

Slow down and watch for others In the Kentucky manual, a flashing yellow light means you must slow down and watch for others. You'll find them at intersections, in construction areas and on some vehicles, such as tow trucks.

  6. Three-section traffic signal with the top red light lit

You are stopped at this light and want to turn left. When may you do it in Kentucky?

Only after stopping, when turning from a one-way street onto another one-way street The manual says left turns on red are allowed only from a one-way street onto a one-way street. You must stop first, then turn when the road is clear of vehicles and pedestrians.

  7. Who must ride with you while you drive on a Kentucky permit?

A licensed driver 21 or older in the front passenger seat Permit holders may drive only with a licensed driver who is at least 21 and sits in the front passenger seat. That's why you can't drive yourself to your road test alone.

  8. If you get your permit at 16, how long must you hold it before you can take the road test?

180 days Permit holders ages 15 to 20 must hold the permit for at least 180 days before the road test. Drivers 21 and older only need to wait 30 days.

  9. Before a teen can get an intermediate license, the practice driving log must show at least:

60 hours, including 10 at night Kentucky asks for at least 60 hours of practice driving, with 10 of them at night. A parent or guardian signs the log to certify the hours.

  10. A 16-year-old with a Kentucky permit wants to drive at 1 a.m. to see friends. Is that allowed?

No. Permit holders under 18 may not drive between midnight and 6 a.m. without good cause Permit holders under 18 may not drive between midnight and 6:00 a.m. unless they can show good cause, such as an emergency, school or work. Seeing friends doesn't count.

  11. On a Kentucky permit or intermediate license under 18, how many unrelated passengers under 20 may you carry?

One The passenger rule limits you to one unrelated person under 20. Family members don't count toward the limit.

  12. You and another driver reach a four-way stop at the same time. The other car is on your right. Who goes first?

The driver on your right The manual says to yield to the driver on your right at a four-way intersection controlled by stop signs when you both arrive at the same time.

  13. You're turning left on a green light, and a car is coming toward you. What should you do?

Yield to the oncoming car, then turn when it's safe Left turns on a green light must yield to through traffic coming from the other direction. The manual adds that this includes oncoming vehicles turning right.

  14. Which way do you travel when you enter a roundabout?

Counterclockwise The manual says to enter a roundabout or traffic circle in a counterclockwise direction, go to your exit, signal and exit.

  15. If no speed limit is posted, what is the limit on Kentucky interstates and parkways?

  17. How far back should you stay from the car ahead in normal conditions, according to the Kentucky manual?

At least four seconds The manual teaches the counting method: pick a fixed point, count the seconds until you reach it, and keep following no closer than four seconds.

  18. When must you dim your high beams for an oncoming vehicle?

Within 500 feet The manual says to dim your lights whenever you come within 500 feet of an oncoming vehicle, and within 300 feet of a vehicle you are following.

  19. For a driver under 21 in Kentucky, what blood alcohol concentration breaks the law?

0.02 or more Drivers under 21 fall under Kentucky's Zero Alcohol Tolerance rule, defined as a blood alcohol concentration of 0.02. For drivers 21 and over, the limit is 0.08, and you can be charged below that if your driving is impaired.

  20. A school bus has stopped with its stop arm out and lights flashing on a two-lane road. You're coming from the opposite direction. What must you do?

Stop, and stay stopped until the bus moves again Kentucky requires a stop for a stopped school or church bus from either direction on all roads. You don't move until the bus has finished loading or unloading and is in motion. The only exception is traveling the opposite way on a road with four or more lanes split by a barrier or an unpaved median.
