Renewing online with a Letter ID
To renew online, you link your myDrive account to your license with a 9-character Letter ID. It must come from a Transportation Cabinet letter dated on or after June 6, 2026 and issued in the last 60 days. You can ask for one by mail when you set up the account, and it takes 5 to 10 business days, or get one at a Regional Office.
Motorcycle permits and REAL ID permits can't be renewed online. If your name or address has changed, you upload proof.
Timing and the vision screening
- Renew up to six months before your license expires. Under 21, your license expires 90 days after your 21st birthday and can't be renewed before then.
- Expired less than five years: no retesting. More than five years: you start over as a new driver.
- Every renewal needs a vision screening. It's free and quick at a Regional Office, with no appointment. Or a vision specialist can fill in Form TC 94-202 within the last 12 months.
- Military members stationed outside Kentucky, and their families, can renew by mail or email with Form TC 94-28.
Lost, stolen or changing details
- A replacement for a lost, stolen or damaged license is $15, online through myDrive, by mail with TC 94-192, or at a Regional Office.
- You must update your address within 10 days of moving. It's $15, online, by mail or in person, with one proof of the new address.
- Name changes are in person only, for $15. Update your name with Social Security first.
- You get a temporary credential, and the card usually arrives by mail in 10 to 15 business days.
