How does the Missouri CDL permit test work?
The Highway Patrol gives the CDL knowledge tests at its driver examination stations, and the skills tests at CDL sites in each troop. All CDL written tests, including the school bus endorsement, are in English only. The questions come from the Missouri Commercial Driver License Manual. Federal entry-level driver training rules also apply, and the Patrol points you to the FMCSA for those.
The commercial learner's permit
The permit costs $19 and is valid for up to a year, 360 days or less, as of October 2026. It can't be renewed, and the department doesn't mail a reminder before it runs out, so plan your skills test inside that year. If you apply at 18, you still have to meet the under-21 requirements for a full license.
Skills test and fees
CDL skills tests are by appointment only, unlike car tests. The Highway Patrol lists its CDL testing sites and phone numbers in a PDF. There's no charge at the testing station, but the Department of Revenue charges a $25 testing fee when you buy the license. The license itself is $29 for up to three years or $58 for up to six, as of October 2026.
Missouri CDL practice test options
There's no official CDL practice test from the Patrol. The manual is the source, and several of the apps on our study options page include CDL question sets. Our own 20 practice questions are for the car test, though the Driver Guide basics carry over.
