Missouri permit study guide: where to learn

Start with the free one. The best Missouri permit study guide is the Missouri Driver Guide itself, revised in August 2026, because all 25 written questions come from it. The Department of Revenue also posts an audio version on YouTube. For more practice after that, compare the apps and courses Missouri learners use, checked in October 2026.

What's the best Missouri permit study guide?

The Driver Guide. The Department of Revenue doesn't publish a separate study guide for the permit test, and the guide says every question is taken from it. For the car test, read Chapters 1 and 3 to 11, plus 16 on phones and distracted driving. You can skip Chapter 15 unless you're going for a Class E license.

How to choose

The license steps in the Driver Guide don't include a driver education course, so for the written test the choice is about how you like to study. If you take things in better by ear, the official audio version reads the guide chapter by chapter.

Apps are good for drilling once you've read the guide. Before paying for one, check when it was last updated: the guide was revised in August 2026, and Missouri's hands-free phone law has only carried penalties since January 1, 2025, so an older app may teach outdated phone rules. A paid plan is worth it only when the free questions stop teaching you anything new.

If you're studying for a Class E, CDL or motorcycle test, pick a resource that covers that test by name. Most apps lead with the car test.

A study path that works

  1. Read Chapters 1 and 3 to 11 of the Missouri Driver Guide, plus 16.
  2. Go through Chapter 7 twice. Signs come up on both the written test and the road sign test.
  3. Try our 20 practice questions and reread the sections behind any you miss.
  4. Go to a Highway Patrol station with your ID and take the vision, road sign and written tests.
  5. With your permit, log 40 hours of practice, 10 at night. The Department of Revenue has a log sheet, Form 4901, for this.
