The Missouri Class E driver license (chauffeur's license)

Class E is Missouri's for-hire license, often called a chauffeur's license. You need a Missouri Class E driver license if you're paid to drive people or deliver goods in a vehicle that doesn't need a CDL, and you can get one from 18. It isn't the regular license. Most drivers need Class F, which is the permit test the rest of this site covers.

Who needs a Missouri Class E driver license?

The Driver Guide gives these reasons for getting one:

  • You're paid to drive a vehicle carrying 14 or fewer passengers, such as a day care center driver.
  • You carry property for pay or as part of your job, such as a florist's delivery driver.
  • You regularly drive your employer's vehicle built for freight, up to 26,000 pounds and not placarded for hazardous materials.

Two groups are exempt: rideshare and taxi drivers in vehicles of 12,000 pounds or less, and people delivering prepared food, for example from a fast food restaurant.

How the Class E test is different

The written test covers the whole Driver Guide but mainly Chapter 15, on commercial vehicles, which the Class F test leaves out. The Highway Patrol says the Class E, Class F and motorcycle written tests are each 25 questions with an 80% pass mark. The Class E test is in English and Spanish, and its oral version is English only.

You also pass the vision and road sign tests. If you already hold a Class F license, there's no driving test. At 18, you still have to meet the under-21 requirements for a full license.

Fees and the school bus endorsement

A Class E license is $24 for up to three years or $48 for up to six, as of October 2026. Driving students to and from school or school events in a vehicle built for more than ten passengers needs a school bus (S) endorsement, which you can get from 21 with a Class E license or a CDL with a passenger endorsement.

Studying for the Class E test

Read Chapter 15 closely as well as the chapters for the regular test. Our 20 practice questions cover the Class F material, which is most of the Class E test too. The Department of Revenue's old sample sheet is labeled for both Class F and Class E, but it dates from 2015, so check its numbers against the current guide.
