The Missouri driver's manual: the Missouri Driver Guide

Its official name is the Missouri Driver Guide, and the current edition was revised in August 2026. This is the Missouri driver's manual that every written test question comes from, free as a PDF from the Department of Revenue, with an audio version on YouTube. People also call it the Missouri permit book or the driver's handbook.

Where can you get the Missouri driver's manual?

Download it from the Department of Revenue's Driver Guide page, which links the whole PDF and each chapter on its own. The audio version is a YouTube playlist from the department. The guide itself tells you to check the website for the current version, because laws change between editions.

What's in the Missouri permit book

The guide has 16 chapters:

  • Chapters 1 and 2: license types, the graduated license, documents and the four-part exam.
  • Chapters 3 to 6: right-of-way, roundabouts, sharing the road, parking and highway driving.
  • Chapter 7: pavement markings, signs and signals, the base for the road sign test.
  • Chapters 8 to 11: safe driving, bad weather, alcohol and drugs, and the point system.
  • Chapters 12 to 16: titles, insurance, inspections, commercial vehicles and phones.

Is the Missouri permit test open book?

No. The Driver Guide says in capital letters that the written test is not open book. Chapter 15 isn't tested for a regular Class F license, but it is for Class E.

Missouri driving laws worth learning first

These laws from the guide are easy to miss:

  • Your car must carry liability insurance of at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per crash for bodily injury, and $25,000 per crash for property damage, plus uninsured motorist coverage of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per crash.
  • Illegally parking in a space for people with disabilities brings a fine of $50 to $300.
  • 4 points in 12 months gets you a warning letter from the department. Reach 8 points in 18 months and the first suspension is 30 days.
  • Failing to stop for a school bus that's loading or unloading adds 5 points and can bring a 90-day suspension.
  • Under 21, possessing or using alcohol or drugs while driving can cost you your license for 90 days under the Abuse and Lose law.

Other Missouri manuals

The Driver Guide doesn't cover everything. CDL tests come from the Missouri Commercial Driver License Manual and motorcycle tests from the Motorcycle Operator Manual. The guide says both are on the Department of Revenue website and that you can ask for a copy at a Highway Patrol station or license office.
