What's on the MO driver's license renewal test?
The vision test checks how sharp your sight is and your side vision. The standard is at least 20/40 with one or both eyes, and at least 55 degrees of side vision in each eye or 85 in one. Bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them. If you don't meet the standard, you get a form for an eye doctor to fill in, and you may get a restriction such as corrective lenses.
The road sign test is the same one new drivers take. It checks that you recognize signs and know what they mean, so it's worth a look at newer ones like the flashing yellow arrow.
When and where to renew
Renew at any license office, up to six months before your license expires. The department mails a reminder to the address on your record, but it's your job to renew even if it never arrives. There's no late renewal fee, but driving on an expired license can get you a ticket, and after 184 days you're back to the full four-part exam.
A Class F license costs $16.50 for up to three years or $33 for up to six, according to the Driver Guide's fee chart, as of October 2026. The department's online fee page also shows $25.50, which is the duplicate license fee, not a renewal price. Active-duty military and their families can renew by mail with Form 4317.
Can you renew online?
Some people can. You must be 21 to 49, have a U.S. citizenship indicator on your record, have a license that's valid or expired no more than 184 days, and have renewed in person last time. You confirm a vision exam from the past 12 months instead of testing at the office, and your driving history must pass a check.
Renewing an instruction permit
A Class F instruction permit is valid for up to 12 months. You can renew it as many times as you need without taking the written test again, as long as it hasn't been expired more than six months. No reminder is mailed for permits, so watch the date. A motorcycle permit is different: it lasts six months and can be renewed only once.
