The Nevada Driver's Handbook

The Nevada Driver's Handbook (DMV 700) is the DMV's free study guide for the permit test, and the DMV says the knowledge test is based on it. The current edition is dated March 2024. You can download it as a PDF in English or Spanish, and there are separate handbooks for motorcycles and commercial driving.

What to read first

  • Chapter 3, Driving Safely, is the longest and carries most of the test: signs, signals, road markings, right-of-way, speed, turns, passing and parking.
  • Chapter 1 covers permits, the teen rules and fees. Expect questions on the 15 and a half age limit and who can supervise you.
  • Chapter 10 on DUI has the numbers people mix up: 0.08% for adults, 0.04% for commercial drivers, 0.02% under 21.
  • Chapter 9 explains demerit points, and chapter 6 covers school buses, cyclists and pedestrians.

Audio version and the parents' guide

The DMV has an audio Class C handbook in English and Spanish, in 12 chapters each. It's from the previous edition, so the DMV says to check the current PDF for requirements.

Parents of teen drivers can download the DMV's Parents Driving Guide, which goes with the 50-hour practice log.
