Taking the Nevada permit test online

Yes, you can take the Nevada written permit test online from home. The DMV recommends it: the KnowToDrive Nevada test is open 24/7, needs no appointment, and sends your result to the DMV automatically. You still visit a DMV office afterwards to get the permit itself, and teens can take driver education online too.

What you need for the online test

  • A computer with a front-facing camera. Touch-screen devices such as phones and tablets aren't supported.
  • 60 minutes to answer 25 questions. You need 20 right.
  • The test in English or Spanish.
  • The $25 testing fee, which the DMV requires before the written test, as of October 2026.

After you pass online

Your pass is valid for one year. Teens then book a DMV appointment and bring a parent or guardian, documents and the DMV 301 school form to get the permit. You'll take a vision test there and leave with a paper permit you can drive on right away. The card arrives by mail within 10 business days.

Adults 18 and older can skip the permit and go straight to the road test, but then they must book the drive test in person at a DMV office.

Online drivers ed in Nevada

Most first-time drivers under 18 must finish driver education, and an approved online course is one of the DMV's options. Either way you also need 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 at night.

The DMV's list of licensed schools for training drivers shows which offer online courses, such as DriversEd.com, Aceable, iDriveSafely, Safe2Drive and several Nevada-based schools. The DMV licenses schools but doesn't set their prices.

What else you can do online

Many other DMV jobs, such as renewing a license, getting a duplicate or printing your driving history, run through the MyDMV portal. First licenses, instruction permits and REAL IDs still need an office visit.
