How the Nevada written test is scored

Each of the 25 questions counts the same, and you pass with 20 right. Miss 6 and you fail. You'll know your result when you finish, and a pass is good for one year. A fail costs $10 to retake, and you can try again the next day.

The DMV's own practice quiz is scored the same way: 25 questions, 20 to pass. It shows the right answers at the end, so it's a good check before the real thing.

Fail, retake or disqualified

  • Failed: you can retake the test the next day.
  • Disqualified: you can retake it after 24 hours.
  • Each retest costs $10. The first test is covered by the $25 testing fee, which also covers your first skills test, as of October 2026.
  • Online, you have 60 minutes to finish. At a DMV office there's no time limit, but testing closes 30 minutes to an hour before the office closes.

How long a pass lasts

Written test results are valid for one year from the day you pass. An instruction permit is also valid for one year. If your permit has been expired for more than 30 days, you have to take the written test again.
