How it works

The written test: 25 questions, 20 to pass, online or at the DMV

  1. The knowledge test has 25 multiple-choice questions on Nevada traffic laws, road signs and safe driving, all from the Nevada Driver's Handbook.
  2. You need 20 right to pass, which is 80%.
  3. You can take it online through the DMV's KnowToDrive Nevada site, any time, in English or Spanish. You get 60 minutes and need a computer with a front-facing camera, since touch screens aren't supported.
  4. Or take it at a DMV office on a touch-screen computer in English, Spanish or audio format, with no time limit. You'll need an appointment.
  5. A pass is valid for one year. The online result goes to the DMV automatically.
  6. If you fail, you can try again the next day. If you're disqualified, you wait 24 hours. Each retest costs $10.
  7. If you're under 18, you still go to a DMV office with a parent or guardian and your documents to get the permit itself. You take a vision test there.

Topics

What’s on the test

01

Signs, signals and road markings

Nevada's handbook teaches signs by color and shape first. This chapter covers both, plus traffic lights, flashing signals and the center turn lane.

Key points (4)
  • Orange means road work, blue means driver services and brown means recreation or scenic areas.
  • A pennant means no passing, a pentagon means a school zone and a round sign means a railroad crossing ahead.
  • A flashing red light is the same as a stop sign. If signals are out, stop fully before going through.
  • You may drive no more than 200 feet in a center turn lane before turning left.
02

Instruction permits and Nevada's teen rules

What it takes to get a permit at 15 and a half, who must ride with you, and the limits on new teen drivers.

Key points (4)
  • You can get a permit at 15½ with a parent or guardian's consent. It's valid for one year.
  • Your supervising driver must be licensed, at least 21, with a year of experience, and sit beside you.
  • Under 18, you hold the permit for at least 6 months and log 50 hours, 10 at night.
  • New 16 and 17 year old drivers can't carry passengers under 18, except family, for 6 months, and can't drive from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. except to or from a scheduled event.
03

Right-of-way, school buses and emergency vehicles

Nevada law only says who must yield. Failure to yield is the leading cause of crashes in the state, so this chapter gets a lot of questions.

Key points (4)
  • At an intersection with no signs or signals, the vehicle on your right usually goes first.
  • For a siren or flashing lights, pull right, clear of any intersection, and stop.
  • Stop for a school bus with flashing red lights. On a divided highway, only traffic going the same way must stop.
  • A blind pedestrian with a white cane or guide dog has the right-of-way.
04

Speed, following distance, turns and lights

Nevada's basic speed rule, the posted limits, and the distances the handbook expects you to know for signaling, following and dimming your lights.

Key points (4)
  • School zones are 15 or 25 mph, from half an hour before school to half an hour after.
  • Stay at least two seconds behind at 40 mph or less, and more at higher speeds.
  • Signal 100 feet ahead in the city and 300 feet on open highways.
  • Dim high beams 500 feet before oncoming cars and 300 feet behind a car you're following.
05

Seat belts, child seats, phones and DUI

The safety rules behind many test questions, and the penalties that follow if you break them.

Key points (4)
  • Children under 2 ride in a rear-facing safety seat in the back seat.
  • Handheld calls, texting and internet use while driving are banned. Hands-free calls are allowed.
  • The alcohol limit is 0.08% for adults, 0.04% for commercial drivers and 0.02% for drivers under 21.
  • Refusing a test requested by an officer gets your license revoked for a year on a first offense.
06

Parking, railroad crossings and your driving record

Where you can't park, how to cross railroad tracks safely, and how Nevada's demerit points work.

Key points (4)
  • Don't park within 15 feet of a hydrant (parallel parking), 20 feet of a crosswalk or 50 feet of a railroad rail.
  • If a train is coming, stop at least 15 feet from the tracks.
  • Minimum insurance is $25,000 for one person's injury, $50,000 for two or more and $20,000 for property damage.
  • 12 or more demerit points in 12 months means a suspended license.

Road signs

Signs, signals and road markings in the Nevada handbook

Chapter 3 of the Nevada handbook puts signs, signals and road markings together. Start with shape and color: a pennant on the left means no passing, and orange means a work zone where fines go up.

  • Red octagon with white border and the word STOP in whiteStop: full stop, then go when it's clear
  • Downward-pointing red triangle with white center and the word YIELD in redYield: slow down and let others go first
  • Red circle with a white horizontal bar on a white square, reading DO NOT ENTERDo not enter: you'd be going the wrong way
  • White rectangular sign reading SPEED LIMIT 55Speed limit: the most you may drive
  • Yellow pennant pointing right reading NO PASSING ZONENo passing zone: stay behind the car ahead
  • Yellow diamond with a black arrow curving to the rightCurve ahead: slow down before it
  • Orange diamond reading ROAD WORK 1000 FTRoad work ahead: slow down, fines go up
  • Fluorescent yellow-green pentagon with two children walkingSchool: watch for children
  • Round yellow sign with a black X and two letters RRailroad crossing ahead: look and listen
  • White X-shaped crossbuck reading RAILROAD CROSSINGCrossbuck: if a train is coming, stop at least 15 feet back
  • Traffic signal with the red light lit and flash marks around itFlashing red: same as a stop sign
  • Center lane bordered by solid yellow outer lines and broken yellow inner lines, with opposing left-turn arrowsCenter turn lane: no more than 200 feet before your turn

Here you need the same 80%, so 16 of 20 is a pass. After each answer, the tutor can explain it another way or show why the other choices are wrong.

  1. Yellow pennant pointing right reading NO PASSING ZONE

    What does this sign mean?

You are entering a no-passing zone The Nevada handbook lists the pennant as the shape for no passing. It sits on the left side of the road, so drivers thinking about passing see it.

  2. Orange diamond reading ROAD WORK 1000 FT

An orange sign like this on the road ahead usually tells you about:

Road construction or repair work In the handbook's list of standard colors, orange means a road construction or repair warning. Slow down, follow the posted signs and do what any flagger tells you. Fines go up for violations in work zones.

  3. Traffic signal with the red light lit and flash marks around it

You come to this traffic light and it keeps flashing. What must you do?

Come to a full stop, then go when the road is clear and it's your turn The handbook says a flashing red light means the same as a stop sign. You stop completely and go only when the road is clear and you have the right-of-way.

  4. Center lane bordered by solid yellow outer lines and broken yellow inner lines, with opposing left-turn arrows

You're in a center lane marked like this. How far may you travel in it before making your left turn?
