Tennessee permit test appointment: when to book and how

You don’t need one. The teen page of the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security says walk-ins are welcome for every visit, and a Tennessee permit test appointment saves time at the centers that take appointments. Road tests are different: the manual says they’re taken by appointment.

Is a Tennessee permit test appointment worth it?

At a busy center it can. The manual says knowledge tests are given first come, first served, so a walk-in waits for a turn. At a center without appointments, you simply walk in.

How to book

The locations page sends you to the Online Ticketing System:

  1. Open the Online Ticketing System and choose Driver License Appointment
  2. Pick a center that takes appointments, and give a valid email address and phone number
  3. Choose the kind of visit, such as a knowledge test, REAL ID, a name or address change, or a new license, renewal or replacement
  4. To cancel or reschedule later, use My Appointments

On the day

If you’re late, the center may cancel your appointment and treat you as a walk-in. Bring the same documents as any first visit.

Road tests and commercial tests

A road skills test is booked on its own, online for regular and motorcycle licenses, with its own rules on who can book online. A commercial road skills test is booked by phone or with a certified third party tester.
