The Tennessee online driving test for ages 15 to 17

It isn’t a road test: it’s the permit knowledge test, taken at home on a computer with a parent or legal guardian as proctor. The Tennessee online driving test has 30 questions, you need 80% to pass, and it comes in English and Spanish. Afterward you visit a Driver Services Center for the vision screening and your documents.

  • Up to 5Applicants one proctor may supervise
  • 2Online tries you get
  • 60 minutesTime limit for the whole test

Who can take the Tennessee online driving test?

You must be at least 15 and no older than 17. Your parent or legal guardian acts as proctor, and the Department checks the proctor’s identity against its own records. At 18 or older, you take the knowledge test at a Driver Services Center instead.

How it works, step by step

From the Department’s online test page:

  1. The proctor downloads the Tennessee Proctor ID app from the App Store or Google Play, on their own phone or tablet, not yours
  2. The proctor registers in the app, then goes to the IDEMIA testing site
  3. You confirm the registered email address, where the results are sent
  4. After you pass, click “Show Test Receipt” and print it. A passing confirmation comes by email too

What you need

For the test itself:

  • A computer, laptop or tablet. You can’t use a cell phone for the test
  • An up-to-date version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox
  • For the proctor, a compatible phone or tablet. On an iPhone, that means an iPhone 6 or a later model, with iOS 13.1 or a later version

Rules during the test

Any of these is an automatic fail:

  • Leaving the test screen
  • Missing the mid-test check at the 30-minute mark, when the proctor scans a QR code. You skip it if you finish before then
  • A network or power cut that lasts more than an hour

Asking anyone for help isn’t allowed, and neither are electronic or recording devices, notes or written reference material. If the network or power drops for less than an hour, you carry on once the proctor signs in again.

If you don’t pass, and what follows

Wait 24 hours before you try again. If your online tries run out, you take the test at a Driver Services Center. Even after an online pass, the Department may ask you to retake the test at a center.

Passing also lets you take the Class M knowledge test online.
