TN drivers license offices: centers, kiosks and county clerks

Tennessee’s Department of Safety and Homeland Security runs the Driver Services Centers, and partners such as self-service kiosks and county clerk offices handle part of the work. Only some of them give tests, so which TN drivers license office you need depends on the job.

Which TN drivers license office do you need?

The locations page lists five kinds:

  • Full-service centers: knowledge, road skills and vision tests, new licenses, graduated license upgrades, driving records and reinstatements
  • Express service centers: renewals, replacements, graduated license upgrades and driving records, but no tests
  • Commercial driver license (CDL) skills test centers: road skills tests for commercial licenses
  • Self-service kiosks: renewals and replacements, paid by card
  • County clerks and other partners: renewals and replacements of non-commercial licenses

For a permit, a first license or a move from another state, go to a full-service center.

Finding a center and its hours

The location search on the locations page covers centers, county clerks and kiosks, with each one’s address, hours and services. The manual says centers close on official state holidays and are typically busier right after one. For help finding the right place, it lists two numbers:

  • Toll-free, for finding a center or booking a road test: 1-866-849-3548
  • Telecommunications device line for hearing impaired callers: 615-532-2281

Renewing a license

A Tennessee license is renewed every eight years from the date it was issued. You can renew at a kiosk, an express service center or a county clerk office as well as a full-service center, and county clerks charge their own administrative fee on top.

Before you go

Check the locations page for closure notices, because centers sometimes close for staff training or remodeling. Firearms aren’t allowed on Driver Services Center premises.
