What’s on the TN.gov practice permit test?

The manual says the Department’s online practice tests each focus on one area of study, and it names the chapters behind each:

  • Alcohol, other drugs and driving: chapter B-7
  • Guidelines for driving: chapters B-1 and B-2
  • Rules of the road: chapters B-4, B-5, B-6 and B-8
  • Traffic signs and signals: chapter B-3

At 18 or older, the adult first-time driver steps point to the same practice tests before the knowledge test.

The manual’s own sample questions

Each chapter of section B ends with a few sample questions, each with the page that holds its answer. The manual says they’re actual questions from the driver license test, but the test you get may be different in whole or in part, so use them to check what you know, not to learn answers by heart.

A study plan for the four test areas

Five steps, built from the manual:

  1. Read section B in order, from getting ready to drive through driving responsibility.
  2. Learn the sign shapes and colors in chapter B-3 until you know each sign at a glance.
  3. Give chapter B-7 extra time, because alcohol and drugs get a full share of the test.
  4. Read section C for defensive driving and sharing the road with pedestrians, bikes, motorcycles and trucks.
  5. Try the 20 practice questions on this site, the manual’s sample questions and the TN.gov practice tests, then reread whatever you miss.

Learning to drive with a parent

Chapter C-4 of the manual is written for parents and teens. It covers planning practice sessions, driving contracts and help for beginners who don’t speak English, and it ends with a driving experience log for the supervised hours the intermediate license asks for.

Do you need driver’s ed in Tennessee?

The Department’s permit and license steps don’t include a driver education course. Students in a Department-approved driver training course don’t need a license while they drive with a certified instructor, and one graduated license penalty requires a course, which the intermediate license page explains.
