The TN driver’s license F endorsement test, for paid drivers

If your main job is driving people or goods in a Class D vehicle, Tennessee adds a For-Hire endorsement, the F, to your license. The TN driver’s license F endorsement test is a vision screening plus a knowledge test written for for-hire driving, using section B of the manual.

  • 18Youngest age, with a family exception
  • $30.50Class D license with the F endorsement
  • 2 yearsUnrestricted driving you need first

Who needs the F endorsement?

The manual says it’s for people whose main job is to drive, such as:

  • Taxi, shuttle and ambulance drivers, who carry people
  • Couriers and delivery drivers, such as for flowers or pizza, who carry goods

People who drive as part of another job, such as plumbers, meter readers and engineers, don’t normally need it, though an employer may ask for it anyway, for insurance or safety reasons. The manual calls it a bridge between the regular license and a commercial license.

Who can apply

You must be driving a Class D vehicle. The one exception to the age of 18: at 16, you can qualify if the vehicle belongs to your family’s business and you deliver only that business’s goods.

What is on the TN driver’s license F endorsement test?

You pass a vision screening and a knowledge test made for the For-Hire endorsement, with questions from section B of the manual. Adding the endorsement costs $4.50.

Practice for the F endorsement test

Section B of the manual is the study material. Its chapter sample questions and the 20 practice questions on this site cover section B topics, though neither is the for-hire test itself.
