The Vermont DMV enhanced license (EDL)

An enhanced driver's license lets a US citizen come back into the country by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean or Bermuda, in place of a passport. It doesn't work for international flights. The Vermont DMV enhanced license costs $75 for 2 years or $98 for 4 years, and your first one takes an office visit with proof of US citizenship.

What does the Vermont DMV enhanced license cost?

Enhanced licenseFee
2 years$75
4 years$98
2 years, with motorcycle endorsement$83
4 years, with motorcycle endorsement$114

The enhanced part is $36 on top of the regular license fee. The DMV's FAQ says Vermont's enhanced license and enhanced ID are accepted for official federal purposes, such as boarding domestic flights.

Documents for your first enhanced license

  • Proof of identity and date of birth.
  • Social Security information.
  • Proof of Vermont residency.
  • Proof of US citizenship.

The DMV's information sheet, form VL-018, lists the documents in detail. Use form VL-021, the License/Permit Application, for a new license or to upgrade at renewal. The DMV's replacement page uses the same VL-021 for a replacement license, which is how you upgrade a current one.

Applying in person

  • The first enhanced license needs an office visit, and appointments are highly recommended. Not every office issues them.
  • You can't upgrade from REAL ID to an enhanced license online.
  • Under 18, apply in person with a parent or guardian who can prove the relationship. You'll show your Social Security number and US citizenship.
  • A temporary enhanced license isn't accepted at the border. If your card hasn't arrived within 20 days, contact the DMV.
