Vermont driver's license renewal: online, by mail or in person

You can renew online at myDMV, by mail or in person, starting six months before your license expires. Online and mail renewals only work if your photo stays valid for the whole new term, and non-REAL ID licenses can't renew online yet. A Vermont driver's license renewal costs the same as a new license: $39 for 2 years or $62 for 4.

Which way can you renew?

HowWho can use itWhat you get
Online at myDMVREAL ID holders whose photo stays valid for the new termA printable receipt, then the license by mail in 14-20 business days
By mailAnyone whose photo stays valid for the new termThe license by mail. Send the renewal notice or form VL-021 with payment
In personEveryone, including CDL holders and anyone who needs a new photoA temporary license on the spot

The online receipt isn't valid for driving or ID. There's no expedited service and no tracking number, but you can check an online order's status after you log in to myDMV.

When to renew, and the grace period

You can renew up to six months before your license expires. The DMV mails a renewal notice about a month before. A standard Class D license has a 14-day grace period after it expires, while commercial licenses have none. Once a license has been expired for more than three years, you have to test again to get a new one.

How much is a Vermont driver's license renewal?

License2 years4 years
Standard license$39$62
Reduced fee (SSI, SSDI, disability)-$20

A learner's permit renews for $24. If you renew early, the full years left on your current license are credited toward the fee. Motorcycle endorsement and replacement fees are on the fees page, and enhanced license fees are on the enhanced license page.

Photos, permits and lost licenses

  • The DMV's renewal page and FAQ say a license photo must be updated every nine years. The 2025 manual says eight, so if your photo is near either mark, plan an office visit.
  • A learner's permit without a photo can't be renewed online or by mail. Renew it in person so a photo can be taken.
  • To replace a lost license, use myDMV, or apply at an office.
  • Name changes, removing a restriction and upgrading to an enhanced license all need an office visit.
