Vermont permit practice test: where to practice and study

Start with the DMV's own practice exam. It comes at the end of DriveVermont, the DMV's free web tutorial, and the Vermont Driver's Manual says it will look very similar to the real test. The real one has 20 multiple-choice questions and you need 16 right, so treat 80% as the mark to beat on any Vermont permit practice test. Apps and websites add more questions if you want them, but the manual is still what the test is built on.

How do you use the DMV's Vermont permit practice test?

  1. Read the Vermont Driver's Manual first. Chapter 7 is written to prepare you for the permit test, and the manual tells you to read the rest of it too.
  2. Work through the DriveVermont lessons. They use pictures, videos and short quizzes to test what you've just read.
  3. Take the DMV's practice exam at the end of the tutorial, without looking anything up.
  4. For every miss, find the rule in the manual and reread the whole section around it.
  5. Retake the DMV's practice exam until you're clearing 16 out of 20 comfortably. You can't use the manual during the real test.

What DriveVermont gives you

DriveVermont is the DMV's online, interactive version of the manual. The manual describes it as a web tutorial for learning the rules of the road and safe driving while you study for the permit test, with images, videos and quizzes along the way. It also explains what you need to know before the written test and the road test. The practice exam at the end is the DMV's own, and the manual says it looks very similar to the test you'll take.

The manual points you to the DMV's website, dmv.vermont.gov, to start it.

The DMV's DriveVermont login sheet (form VN-004, June 2020) still calls the end test a 25-question permit test and says there's no temporary permit. The 2025 manual and the Learner's Permit page are newer, so go by them.

Studying in another format or language

  • Audio: the DMV posts the manual's Chapters 4, 5 and 7 as MP3 files. Its page says they were last updated on January 12, 2022, so check anything that sounds different against the PDF.
  • Translations: the DMV lists the manual in Arabic, Bosnian, Burmese, Dari, Farsi, French, Kirundi, Mandarin Chinese, Nepali, Pashto, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Swahili and Ukrainian.
  • The permit test itself comes in English, American Sign Language and 14 other languages. The online services page lists them.
  • If a disability makes reading hard, the manual says the DMV will work with you on an accommodation. Tell it when you get in touch.

Choosing extra practice

  • If you're 16 or 17, you'll take a 30-hour driver education course before your license anyway. Its classroom hours cover the same rules of the road.
  • If you learn by repetition, an app with a big question bank gives you more tries than one practice exam.
  • If you're studying in another language, start with the DMV's translated manual, then check whether an app offers your language before you pay.
  • Third-party questions aren't the DMV's. When an app and the manual disagree, go with the manual.
