Do you need a CDL?
Generally yes, if your vehicle has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, is designed to carry 16 or more people including the driver, or carries hazardous materials in amounts that must be placarded. WYDOT’s commercial license page has a “Do You Need a CDL?” chart for the details.
Is there a free Wyoming CDL practice test?
Yes, for Wyoming residents. WYDOT says the Driving-Tests.org service is free to all Wyoming residents and includes CDL tests along with car and motorcycle ones. The questions are the site’s own, so use the CDL Manual as the final word: read the general knowledge part first, then the parts for your class and endorsements.
Getting a commercial learner’s permit
Wyoming law (W.S. 31‑7‑110) lets you apply for a commercial learner’s permit (CLP) at 18 or older if you hold a valid Wyoming license. You apply in person, show your documents and, if it applies to you, a valid federal Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card. You pass the general knowledge test and any other written tests for your license, plus a vision screening: 20/40 in each eye and 70 degrees of horizontal vision in each eye.
On the permit, you drive only with a CDL holder licensed for that vehicle in the front passenger seat. A permit with a passenger (P) or school bus (S) endorsement doesn’t let you carry passengers, and one with a tank (N) endorsement covers empty tanks only.
The Wyoming CDL tests
The written tests are free and multiple choice, and you need 80% on each. If you fail one, you retake only that test, and your passes count for as long as your permit lasts. Interpreters aren’t allowed on CDL tests. WYDOT’s July 2026 law summary adds that, from March 5, 2026, Wyoming law (W.S. 31‑18‑608) requires commercial vehicle drivers to show English proficiency, in line with federal rules.
The skills test has a pre-trip inspection, a basic control test and an on-road test. It’s by appointment only, after your written tests and once you’ve paid the skills test fee, in a vehicle you provide that matches your license class. Placarded or loaded vehicles aren’t allowed. WYDOT gives CDL skills tests in Casper, Cheyenne, Cody, Evanston, Gillette, Rawlins, Riverton, Rock Springs, Sheridan and, seasonally, Afton.
Before the skills test, you finish entry-level driver training (ELDT) with a provider on the federal Training Provider Registry if you’re getting a Class A or B license for the first time, upgrading from B to A, or adding a school bus, passenger or hazmat endorsement for the first time. Hazmat training comes before the hazmat knowledge test. After the skills test, you pay for and get your CDL before the permit expires.
