Who has to take the Wyoming driving test?
You take it if you’ve never been licensed in Wyoming or any other state, and to get an intermediate permit at 16, unless an approved driver education program tests you. The 2021 manual adds that drivers whose vision is worse than 20/40 but at least 20/100 take a skills test, and other situations can call for one too.
A valid license from another state may let you skip it, as may an approved driver education certificate.
How to book the driving test
Schedule it on oneWYO, WYDOT’s online portal, or by calling your local exam station. WYDOT says many of its exam stations may require you to book in advance, and that days and hours vary by office, so check the locations map before you go.
What your car needs
Before the test, make sure your vehicle is:
- Legally licensed, registered and insured
- Fitted with seat belts for the driver and the front-seat passenger
- Working: brakes and brake lights, headlights and taillights, turn signals, horn, and rearview and driver’s side mirrors
- Fitted with doors that open from inside and outside
- Without windshield cracks that block your view, and with working wipers
- On tires that aren’t frayed or bulging
What happens on the Wyoming driving test
You drive a route through normal traffic, and you should be ready to show you can drive safely in all kinds of conditions. The 2021 manual says you won’t be asked to do anything against the law. An interpreter may come along on a Class C test, but not on a commercial one.
Can driver education waive the driving test?
Sometimes. If you show a certificate from a program on the Wyoming Department of Education’s approved list, the examiner may waive the skills test, but WYDOT says that’s at the examiner’s discretion. If you’ve already failed a driving test with a state examiner, you take the test again with a state examiner whatever your course.
The 2021 manual says the certification card must show your name, date of birth and license number, carry the original signatures of the instructor and the school administrator, and state that you finished 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel driving.
If you don’t pass
The 2021 manual says you wait 24 hours before you test again. WYDOT’s testing page adds that the examiner can require you to wait longer, days or weeks, based on what they saw on your test, and that a common reason is that you need more driving practice.
