Wyoming driver’s license renewal: online, by mail or in person

You can do a Wyoming driver’s license renewal online through oneWYO, the Driver Services portal of the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT), or by mail, but only every other time. Wyoming law allows one renewal without a visit in any 10-year period. The other times, you renew in person at an exam station, with a new photo and a vision screening.

Can you do a Wyoming driver’s license renewal online?

Yes, if you renewed in person last time. You sign in to oneWYO with a Login.gov account and connect your Wyoming Driver Services record, then renew there. Wyoming law (W.S. 31‑7‑119) lets you skip the in-person visit only when all of these are true:

  • Your license hasn’t been suspended or revoked in the five years before it expires
  • You have no medical impairment that could be a hazard
  • You don’t hold a restricted license for extreme inconvenience (the RC license)
  • Your personal details haven’t changed in a way that needs new documents

Commercial drivers with a hazardous materials endorsement can’t renew by mail or online, because they retake the hazmat test. Non-US citizens can’t either, unless they’re licensed in Wyoming as permanent residents.

Renewing by mail

WYDOT mails you an application 120 days before your license expires, but you can renew up to a year early. Wyoming law (W.S. 31‑7‑119) extends your license for five years this way and wants the application back at least 30 days before your license expires, postmarked by then if you mail it. The vision screening section must be filled in, with a screening date within a year of your application. Send it to Driver Services-WYDOT, 5300 Bishop Boulevard, Cheyenne, WY 82009‑3340, and allow 30 days for processing. Your card then takes 4 to 6 weeks to arrive.

Active-duty military members may renew by mail or online as often as they need, at no charge. Military dependents may too, with the fee and a letter from the service member saying you live with them.

Renewing in person

At least once every 10 years, you renew at an exam station, where you’re photographed and pass a vision screening. If you haven’t shown them before, bring your documents: a valid US passport, or a state-certified birth certificate, or immigration documents, two proofs of Wyoming residency no more than 45 days old, and proof of any name change.

Commercial drivers also show a valid federal Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certificate.

Renewal and replacement fees

ItemFee
Class C license renewal$35
Commercial license or permit renewal$45
Duplicate license$25
Restricted license renewal$25

The duplicate fee is the same for a commercial license. WYDOT takes checks, money orders and cash, and some exam stations take cards for an extra fee.

Lost license, new address or new name

For a lost license, apply in person with a new photo. If your last renewal was in person, you can also get a duplicate on oneWYO or by mail, using your old photo. Under 18, a parent or guardian signs the application.

Wyoming law (W.S. 31‑7‑137) gives you 10 days to tell Driver Services about a new address or name. You can update your address on oneWYO, but a card showing it means going through renewal. A name change is done in person, after you’ve changed it with the Social Security Administration.

If your license has expired

You apply in person for a new license, and the 2021 manual says you may have to retake every part of the examination. WYDOT’s testing page says the written test is required once a license has been expired for two years or more.
