The Wyoming motorcycle license and permit test

The Wyoming motorcycle permit test is the written test for the Wyoming motorcycle license (Class M), taken with a vision screening at a Driver Services exam station of the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT). Its questions come from WYDOT’s 2021 Motorcycle License Manual. Pass it at 15 or older and you can ride on a motorcycle instruction permit, with no passengers. Finishing WYDOT’s Basic RiderCourse instead waives all the Class M tests.

  • 15Youngest age for a motorcycle permit
  • $11Class M fee, added to your license
  • 90 daysPermit length without a riding test

How do you get a Wyoming motorcycle license after the permit test?

WYDOT gives two ways to get a Class M license: pass the written and riding skills tests with a Driver Services examiner, or finish the Basic RiderCourse, which waives both tests. Class M is added to the license you hold. Under Wyoming law (W.S. 31‑7‑110), the written test and a vision screening get you a motorcycle instruction permit for 90 days, or for a year if you pass the riding test too. Either way, you ride without passengers.

Under 17, you may ride only from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., except for a medical need, work, school or a school, youth sports or religious activity, with a signed statement, or a medical emergency. The written test follows the same rules as the car test: English only, twice in one day at most.

The motorcycle skills test

You bring your own motorcycle, completely street legal, and many exam stations may ask you to book ahead on oneWYO or by phone. Wear a properly fitting helmet, a face shield or goggles, sturdy gloves, a jacket or long sleeves, full-length pants and closed-toe footwear that covers your ankles. The test covers:

  • A cone weave
  • A normal stop
  • A right turn from a stop
  • A left U-turn
  • A quick stop
  • An obstacle swerve

Skills tests aren’t given when it’s raining or snowing, or when the course is wet or icy.

Skip the tests with the Basic RiderCourse

WYDOT’s Motorcycle Safety Program runs the Basic RiderCourse for riders 15 and older, and you don’t need a permit to take it. It has a 5-hour online eCourse and 11 hours of riding over two days in a row, with motorcycles and helmets provided. Under 18, a parent or guardian signs a waiver in front of the instructor, or in advance if it’s notarized.

The course costs $50 for Wyoming residents and $150 for out-of-state residents, plus a service fee. Registration opens in April for classes from May through October. Show your completion card to Driver Services within two years and it waives all the Class M tests.

  • A motorcycle is entitled to the full use of a lane, and you may not pass a vehicle in the same lane unless it’s another motorcycle
