How to get a Wyoming driver’s license

You apply for a Wyoming driver’s license in person at a Driver Services exam station of the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT). First-time drivers pass a written test, a vision screening and a driving skills test, and anyone under 18 needs a parent or legal guardian to sign. Teens move up in steps, from an instruction permit at 15 to full privileges at 17. If you’re moving to Wyoming with a license from another state, you switch it in person too.

What is the Wyoming driving age?

AgeWhat you can get
14 or 15A hardship permit, if the Highway Patrol approves
15An instruction permit
16An intermediate permit
16 and a halfFull privileges, with driver ed and 6 months
17Full privileges

Under Wyoming law (W.S. 31‑7‑108), nobody under 16 gets a regular license, and the permits come with limits on who rides with you and when you drive.

What are the Wyoming driver’s license requirements?

You prove your identity, legal presence and Wyoming residency, pass the tests you’re asked to take, and, under 18, bring a minor’s release signed by a parent or legal guardian. If you’re not sure whether your privilege to drive is suspended somewhere, an examiner at your exam station can check the Problem Driver Pointer System (PDPS) for you; bring identification. Wyoming law (W.S. 31‑7‑108) bars a license for anyone who:

  • Has a license or privilege suspended or revoked in Wyoming or any other state
  • Fails a required part of the examination
  • Has been judged mentally incompetent and not restored to competency
  • Is a habitual user of alcohol or a controlled substance, to a degree that makes driving unsafe
  • Is in violation of US immigration laws

The documents to bring are listed on the permit test guide. If you have a medical or vision condition, WYDOT may ask your doctor to fill in a Medical or Vision Evaluation form first.

Moving to Wyoming with a license

Apply in person at your local exam station. You surrender your out-of-state license, show the required documents, have your photo taken and pass a vision screening. The 2021 manual says a valid out-of-state license may let you skip the skills test, and WYDOT’s testing page says the written test is for people never licensed or whose license expired two or more years ago.

You have one year from establishing residency to get a Wyoming license. If your license is from Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, Tennessee or Wisconsin, or it’s a commercial license, WYDOT says to apply as soon as you’ve established residency. Active-duty military members and their dependents don’t have to get a Wyoming license. The manual says the same for full-time students at the University of Wyoming or a Wyoming community college who hold a valid license from another state.

Driving in Wyoming on a license from somewhere else

Visitors can drive in Wyoming on a valid license. A learner’s permit from another state works too, as long as you follow its rules, such as having a licensed driver beside you. A license from another country is valid, and WYDOT recommends, but doesn’t require, an International Driving Permit, which translates it.

If your privilege to drive is suspended, canceled or revoked in any state, driving in Wyoming breaks Wyoming law. Moving violations aren’t recorded in Wyoming: they go to your home state. A conviction for driving under the influence can cost you your driving privileges in Wyoming and at home.

Restricted license or permit$25

WYDOT takes checks, money orders and cash. Some exam stations take credit and debit cards, for an extra fee. WYDOT’s fee list leaves out the intermediate permit: Wyoming law (W.S. 31‑7‑113) sets it at $30, plus the $5 transportation information system fee the law adds to license and permit fees. Renewal and replacement fees are on the renewal page, and commercial driver’s license (CDL) and motorcycle fees on their own pages.
