How do you get the AMC certificate?
- Check that your medical school, degree title and graduation year are eligible.
- Have your medical degree verified by the ECFMG. It must reach outsourced status (sent to your medical school) or verified status (report returned to the AMC).
- Set up a MyIntealth account and an AMC portfolio.
- Pass the AMC CAT MCQ exam.
- Pass the AMC clinical exam, or a WBA program.
Once your final result is in your AMC account, the AMC starts issuing the certificate. Allow up to 5 business days. If it needs more documents, it emails you.
What the certificate looks like, and who sees it
It’s electronic. You view, download and print it from your AMC account. The Medical Board of Australia, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) and any specialist college you nominated can see it through the AMC portal, so you don’t send it to them.
Your certificate carries the first and last names in your AMC account, and the AMC won’t change names once it’s issued. Check your account details before your final result.
After the AMC certificate: registration
The AMC doesn’t register doctors. You apply to the Medical Board of Australia, through Ahpra. For general registration as an AMC certificate holder, the Board asks for 12 months (47 weeks full-time equivalent) of approved supervised practice in Australia, shown in work performance reports from your supervisor, plus a letter of recommendation.
You also need to meet the Board’s standards for English language skills, recency of practice, professional indemnity insurance and continuing professional development, and show a completed medical internship or comparable.
