AMC MCQ exam fees and other AMC costs

The Australian Medical Council (AMC) charges $2,920 for a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) authorisation, which covers one exam event in 12 months. Your AMC MCQ exam fees begin before that, with $642 to set up an initial portfolio. The clinical exam is $3,000 in person or $3,400 online. AMC fees are in Australian dollars and free of GST (goods and services tax).

These are the amounts on the AMC’s fees and charges page. The online clinical exam fee is $3,000 plus a $400 levy, which the AMC charges because at most 18 candidates a day can be assessed online, against 36 at the National Test Centre, the levy page says.

The AMC stopped charging a card payment surcharge from 9:00am Australian Eastern Standard Time on 1 October 2026, with fees otherwise unchanged.

AMC exam fees have come down twice. The MCQ authorisation went down from $3,124 to $2,920 for applications from 8 January 2024, and the clinical exam went from $3,991 to $3,000 in person and from $4,391 to $3,400 online from 1 July 2025.

Apart from portfolio fees, each refund here needs evidence of circumstances outside your control, such as a severe illness, a bereavement or a natural disaster. Minor illness and travel plans don’t count. For the MCQ, ask before the authorisation expires: the refund policy says email mcq@amc.org.au, and the events page says to ask through the AMC contact form for the Cancellation of Authorisation form. If you don’t attend, or break the authorisation rules, it’s used up and nothing comes back. For an online clinical exam lost to an internet or power outage outside your control on the day, the refund is 50%.

Portfolio fees come back in full if the AMC hasn’t reviewed your application, 50% if it has but no ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) verification status has arrived, and not at all after that. The AMC aims to decide a refund request within 10 business days, pay it within 10 more, and return it to the card you paid with.

Costs the AMC doesn’t set

Some costs are set by others. The ECFMG charges its own fees for verifying your credentials, the Medical Board of Australia charges registration fees, and WBA providers set what their programs cost, which the AMC says varies between providers. Travel, visas and accommodation are yours to cover.
