AMC Handbook of Multiple Choice Questions and other AMC publications

The Australian Medical Council (AMC) doesn’t list the AMC Handbook of Multiple Choice Questions among its resources for the Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) exam, and its website doesn’t sell it. What the AMC offers instead is its free MCQ Preparation App, sample questions in its exam specifications, and two books: Australian Medicine in Context and Good Medical Practice. Its MCQ specifications also name an older AMC publication, Annotated Multiple Choice Questions.

Can you get the AMC Handbook of Multiple Choice Questions from the AMC?

The AMC’s publications page and its resource list for international medical graduates (IMGs) don’t include the AMC Handbook of Multiple Choice Questions, and neither does its MCQ page. The MCQ Examination Specifications say the AMC publication Annotated Multiple Choice Questions covers the MCQ format and techniques, but they don’t say how to get it.

So for practice questions written by the AMC, the source it points to is the MCQ Preparation App: 210 questions written by AMC contributors, free with your MCQ authorisation and refreshed every year. The specifications add a set of sample questions, including image questions, in Appendix B.

Free PDF downloads of AMC books

The AMC offers Australian Medicine in Context as a free download, and its exam specifications as downloads on its site. For anything else offered as a free PDF, be careful. The AMC warns that third-party websites, apps and YouTube channels claim to offer AMC exam content, past papers and publications, that it doesn’t endorse them, and that it can’t vouch for their accuracy. It asks you to report them to assessment@amc.org.au.

The specifications also say copyright in all AMC exam material rests with the AMC, and that no part of any exam may be reproduced.

Australian Medicine in Context

This is the AMC’s free book for medical students, IMGs preparing for AMC exams and practising doctors. It builds on the AMC’s Anthology of Medical Conditions (2003), which the AMC says formed the basis of all its exam content, and puts more weight on patient presentations and professional practice.

It has 105 patient presentations and 56 professional practice topics, plus chapters on Australian health care and on cultural, social and population health, including the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You can download it as a PDF from the AMC.

Good Medical Practice: Professionalism, Ethics and Law

The AMC launched the fifth edition on 24 March 2026. It covers the professional, ethical and legal side of being a doctor in Australia, with chapters on telehealth regulation, data privacy and cross-jurisdictional practice, and on confidentiality, informed consent and end-of-life care. That’s useful for the population health and ethics part of the MCQ.

It’s sold in print and as an eBook through retailers such as Amazon, Booktopia and eBooks.com, with a recommended retail price of AUD $109.99. The AMC notes prices vary between retailers.

Is there an AMC handbook for the clinical exam?

The AMC doesn’t list an AMC Handbook of Clinical Assessment among its resources either. For the clinical exam it points to the Clinical Examination Specifications (June 2026), with suggested reading and examples of station material, its Tips from Examiners (October 2024) and its candidate briefing video.
